    Re-Tap a Front GTI Wheel..

    Hi all

I was getting my Rims takes off to get fix and I found that the last place that did my tired balance, and rotation F*$#ed one of my wheel nuts and I have been able to get the nut out but it broke and there is still a little bit in the thread.

You can see it when looking into the hole where the nut normally goes in.

Well just wondering if anyone has had this before and if they were able to get it fixed or if they had to get a new rotor/hub?

The stealer wants to charge $450 + labour to put a new one on.

Got another mechanic say he could do it for $350,
I am going to see him tomorrow to see if he can first re-tap it or if it needs to be replaced.

Any feed back would be great.

    Thanks
    Tom

Engineering supply shop. Take a stud in and ask them for a tap. I have one that will do the MK2/3s. Newer cars have a different thread.

Tom, I would be going back to the wheel joint you got your wheels done at and asking for the torque settings on their air guns. Then I would be trying to get them to pay for the damage they have caused. I'll guarantee that the f**kers just put the bolt in the rattle gun and tightened it so much that they wouldn't have even known that they were cross threading it!!!

Seen this happen too many times, even here at work in the office, one of the guys has made our company pay for a new pair of front hubs on his 4x4 due to the workshop using a rattle gun and snapping 4 out of 8 wheel studs!

Wheel bolts generally should be torqued to around the 120Nm mark, this guy had 1 nut on so tight that a 400Nm torque wrench couldn't get a reading!!

I don't even let my mechanic put the wheels back on my car, I always do them up with a torque wrench.

    Thanks for the info,

I went to Mike Weber here in brisbane who is well know with VW and Audi drivers, he was able to remove the part of the bolt that was left in the hub and was able to re-tap it for me.

Only $50 better than having to replace the hub which I was quoted by the stealers to be $450.

Just thought I would share my out come.

Good to hear it worked out and you got a decent bloke to do it for you, not a rip-off-merchant
