Proposed Brake Upgrade for MKV Gti

    Hey guys,

About to pull the trigger on some brake upgrades for my gti. I'm just going for rotors and pads for now, Im not tracking this car but I do like a spirited drive in the hills occasionally and the stock ones are just not up to it:

Fronts- I figure keeping the weight down on the driven wheels is the most important so Im going for a 2 piece oem replacement open slot rotor from Racingbrake.com and Hawk HPS pads from BWA Auto
Rears - Adams single slot rotors (to match the sinlge slot on the front) and hawk hps pads all from BWA auto.

I know its more expensive rather than just going for adams rotors all round but the weight saving on the front has an exponentional impact on drivability.

The whole thing will cost around $1,500 which is not bad for a decent brake upgrade. Any thoughts?

Money tree taking a hammering Paul!
I have all standard stuff on the S3 except for the pads from GSL, including brake fluid of unknown vintage! That survived 30 minutes hard graft at Lakeside recently.
I think you would be OK just getting some better pads and saving a pile of money.
    Just my thoughts.

    Hey Gav,

Understand your point but Im putting my genntech 18x8.5's which show up the rotors and the slotted ones really look the part as well as the unsprung weight savings. The genntechs are way lighter than the 17" denvers even at 18 x 8.5!

The brakes really are sh*t atm and the pads are quit new, god knows how old the rotors are.

In a way its your fault for giving the car so much damn power! Now I need brakes to haul it in!

    Job done!

I apologise for the power. Just seemed like 1500 was a lot of money. I still think a set of pads all round would be good enough. If you need the aesthetics of slotted discs, there's only one way out.

Check GSL out for prices though.

Aside from the weight saving from 2 piece, don't bother with slotted. You want to have more swept surface area, not less. You're not going to be introducing the car to situations (like braking after hitting 320kph down mulsanne straight at Le mans) to produce enough gas to require slots. F1 don't use slots or drilled rotors and they stop just fine, well, last time I checked anyway (5g of deceleration).

As the other Gavin said, decent pads and good fluid, stick with that. Any other upgrade under $5k in total for the whole system, will be placebo. Sticky tyres, they will help far more than new rotors, hell, get decent semi slicks and they will decrease stopping distances more than pads!
