One for the experts: low speed whine

    MY16 Scirocco, approx 5,000km.

Car has gradually developed a high pitched whine noise over the last few thousand kms. It has gradually become louder and more frequent.

    - Only occurs at low speed, under about 10km/h. Generally when crawling in traffic, coming to a stop or slowly creeping away from a stop.
    - Only occurs when coasting or light acceleration. Does not occur under braking. If whine is occuring it stops instantly if brakes are applied (even lightly)
    - Is intermittent, doesn't happen all the time.
    - happens in both "D" and "M" transmission modes
    - I can't be certain but I think it is coming from the passenger side, possibly from the passenger side rear
    - Sounds to be like a metal on metal type of noise

Any ideas as to what it might be?

The car is only a couple months old, but it did sit on the showroom floor for nearly a year without being driven. Only had 20km on the clock when I bought it. Maybe that is relevant, maybe not.

I haven't taken it to VW yet as I was going to see how it goes to the first 15k service, but then again if it might be something serious I'd like to nip it in the bud now.

    Thanks in advance.

    T

Also, whilst this is posted in the wheels amd suspension section, I have an open mind that it could be something else, maybe a clutch or gearbox issue, although the whine does seem to be vehicle-speed dependant and not engine-speed dependent. So would probably narrow it down.

rock stuck around the brake calipers? kick it in reverse and try to do a few firm brakes and see if it helps

I have a Passat wagon with this exact same issue. Following this thread with interest. (Sorry I have nothing to add though)

Still nothing to report. Whine has reduced a bit (strangely, since taking it for a track day...) however is still present on occasion.

Haha, it's all good. I'm on first name basis down there now. They get paid whether it's warranty or not...

The whine has now gone... must have just been new car tightness or something
