    New tires - 225/40/18 - suggestions? (Pilot Sport 3)

    Hi all,

Need to replace the tires on the jetta with 18" 225/40/18

Originally had a set of RE050 which were average and then replaced with a set of Pilot Sport 3 which were awesome.

That was ~2 years ago now, so any new tires worth trying?

I'd get the Pilot Super Sport or Advan AD08 but they don't come with an extended load rating (need 91+)

Any places in Sydney worth looking up or anyone recently got Pilot Sport 3s for a decent price?

    Thanks

Hey man, I just put Bridgestone RE003's on a set of 18's yesterday, so a little early to commit a long term comment.

They replaced a set of RE002's (17's), new size is 225-40-18. The 002's were just on 18-19 months old, fronts were shot

from lack of rotation (oops...) rear still have good life, maybe another 12 months.

Since yesterday, an hour trip home, plus another 2 x 15 minute stints today, I gotta say I am impressed with the ride

    quality of the 003's.

I was expecting a slightly harsher ride, but so far, I think it's better.

Had RE002 on the A3 and very pleased with them. Recently put on new RE003s in 235/40/18 and very happy - excellent value at a bit over $200.00 a corner before cash back. If the Bridgestone buy 4 pay for 3 is still going you could not do better.

If money is no object then Michelin Pilot Super Sports (I note your comment re load rating). They will stick better than the RE003s but will not last anywhere near as long (have them on my C63 - they are the tyre to beat).

    Go the RE003s.

I got some PS3 17's for my GTI about 6 months ago from Tempe Tyres for a very good price. Looks like they have your PS3 18's for $215 an end.

Yeah RE002 are surprisingly good, RE003 same thing but a bit better. Quieter than PS3 but not quite as good in the wet, better in the dry. A great tyre, especially if you get them during the 3 for 4 campaigns they do.

I got ~55k out of a pair of Goodyear F1A2 tyres on the front of my Skoda Octavia (stage II), absolutely love these tyres
They have a very good turn in feel due to stiff sidewalls
They are more noisy than PS3 (which I have on the rear)
They are excellent in the wet, equal to the PS3
Tempe Tyres sell them for like $225 per corner ( 225/40/18 )

yeah in the end i got a set of 4x PS3.

This was just when the RE003 came out, which every tire shop told me to get but i'm still quite happy with my choice for the PS3 as they handle exceptionally well in the wet and have nice and soft sidewalls so are quite comfortable on the road. Grip at the limit is also quite good and progressive too and they don't screech in corners which is another benefit

I fitted the RE003s in 235/40/18 to my GTI just a few weeks ago (see What did you do to your Mk5 today?).
Replaced Conti Contact 5s on the stock 17" wheels.

Definitely a little more road noise on coarse chip surfaces, but actually might be smoother over small bumps - I think the sidewalls are quite compliant. Grip is great so far - but haven't pushed them too much yet. And no wet weather in Adelaide to test...
