i'd have thought that a little bit of rubbing would be normal, as long as it is not gripping and moves easily like you said (and it stops ok...).
i think in your case you can leave it until you can afford to have them done
I put second hand Mk3 rear disk brakes on my Mk1. I got them from the local wreckers. Perfect bolt on upgrade. However the rear left one was a bit 'stiff'. After some driving up and down the street and around the neighborhood the brakes seemed to be working fine.
However when I just push the car and have it roll I can hear a sort of grinding sound coming from the rear left calipers and pads, it definitely sounds like the pads are still rubbing on the disk, and the the caliper is not retracting as far as it should. It rolls very easy and doesn't seem to be grinding too bad. None of the other calipers are making the same noise.
Is it a big safety issue if the pads are grinding up against the disk abit? I know it will probably make the pads wear out more quickly etc.
Any tips to fix this issue?
Im hesitant to go and get them reconditioned straight away since it would cost me $130 for one (I'd get both recon'd so it would be $260).

My build thread here: 1.6 sr into 1.8T http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/foru...-8t-63249.html
I had a similar dillema when doing my brakes but the problem is for the price of getting them reconditioned you could pick up another set of calipers. I managed to get some audi a3 (or mk4 golf) rear calipers which are the same but made of aluminium so heaps lighter, they only just need different brake lines which you can get off germanautoparts.
Trudging through my emails i picked them up for $125 off the forums.
Btw i know it may sound stupid but just check the dust shield isnt contacting the rotor as its happened to me before!
I had an issue with the inside of the wheel (where the wheel meets the hub) rubbing against the brake pad carrier check the clearance.
