Sounds like sway bar link to me...
Or maybe a bushings in the suspension somewhere
Hey Guys
So I've taken my 3 door Golf R into service today for a knock that I get when going around right hand corners. Basically, as the pressure transfers to the right of the car the left almost feels like it drops and there is a metallic knock sound coming from teh front left.
Was in service all day but the lads couldn't find anything wrong...Well, the sub frame was out of wack and so they put that right and tightened everything up however it still does it, booked back in next week for another day of pulling apart
Any clues what it might be??????

Loose steering rack. The rack slides from side to side.
Cheers

Whitejames that was my guess too after reading a few threads on the net about similar issues, would this be the case if it only does it turning to the right?

It's the ghost of your old GT haunting your suspension.

I parked the GT next to the R for a couple of weeks before it was sold, I could've sworn it went all transformers one night and started beating the **** out of the R's suspension

A friend with a MKV GTI with a similar problem. From memory, it was more pronounced in right turns then left turns - it was a long time ago. If you're driving on crap country roadways including gravel and dirt, it's likely vibrations have caused that rack to loosen further if it wasn't completely tight from factory. Bung CV joints tend to make a ticking sound and fuel sloshing around in the rear tank makes a non-metallic sound.
Cheers.

Mine was making a fairly horrible noise going around right hand corners too like what the hell was that?
The black plastic 'eyebrow' on the front L/H guard was broken and colliding with the tyre on R/H turns.I pulled it off and the noise has gone.
Worth a look.

Just an update. Got the car back today and this was what the Service Tax invoice said......
Please inspect suspension creak from front left
- Carried out road test, Removed LHF suspension leg to inspect spring and top bearing, top bearing broken up and bearings missing from cage. Replaced LHF top suspension bearin, refitted leg, road tested and checked all ok
Sounds like a big job!
Also went in for a check engine light and found a faulty coolant sensor which was replaced and then found to be high resistance in the earth wire. that has now also been rectified.
Well there you have it my only 2 problems in the first 5 months ..... just clicked over 28000 km.

yeah top bearings aren't uncommon across the board, considering the lowish k's wouldnt have expected to see the problem arise yet.
Earliest ive changed a set is roughly 40,000klms
