    Fixing Alloy Wheels

Just a quick question, I've been told alloy wheels with bad gutter rash... or rock rash as the case may be... can be repaired / resurfaced?

Yes sliding into rocks is never a good idea.

Does this look fixable? Scratches are a bit deep. Any ideas on cost or where to in Melbourne?

    Cheers.

By looking at that photo I would say that is definitely fixable. I cant recommend anyone in Melb as I dont live there. And the cost depends on who is doing it.

There was a thread on here a few months back from a guy who had a wheel repair done by a mobile wheel repair company. They came to his house and fixed it in his driveway. I cant remember where the guy was located.

Definitesly fixable. If you were in Bris I could recommend a place that does them for $100 each (come back looking like new).

You could try www.advancedalloys.com.au - in Morrabin, they did an awesome job on mine, not cheap but good quality work.

    Repair cost

I had advancealloys look at my 4 wheels (standard 14 inch) each, with one case of gutter rash. $150 to remove the rash and another $100 to strip the wheel and repaint. + $15 to refit the tyre. so about $265.00 per wheel.

I decided not to get them repaired. I had already spent enough on rego, insurance and a few other repairs to the car, and could not justify the expense this year at least .(I would still like to have them repaired)

I think you can e-mail them with a photo, and they will send you a estimate of repair cost.

    OR ...

You can sand the damaged wheel back, use some spot putty and smooth it all out, sand back the other wheels and take it to a spray painter and get all 4 resprayed in the colour of your choice for between 150-200.Or just spraybomb them black with some generic primer, some Midnight black spray paint (PK0080) and then some acrylic clear with a total cost of around $65...

Thats if your game enough of course...

$1,000+ to repair a set of 14" wheels. what a joke that is. you can get a brand new set of 16's or 17's with tyres for that sort of money.

Yep, I'm well aware of that fact. However I wish to keep the car as stock standard as possible (It was also one of the reasons I put off the repair). Not many of these "attractive"(as stated in the VW brochure) alloys wheels left.
