it'd be fine man, I'd do it, but i have 15's!
Anyone had done this before or know whether its a good idea? Or should I just buy 15" steelies and fit the R specs to them?
Thanks,

What car though? Had 14's with slicks on the mk2 at philip island and they were insanely good
Before decent size brakes. Race fluid and new pads for the win with oem brakes
Will they clear the brakes? I know on my VR6 i got a set of 14's from a MKIV by accident and they didn't clear, I ended up giving them away!

Oh yeah The GTI's must be the only models with the larger brakes i.e. 288mm x 25mm...
they're 14x6, so there will be some but not that much. My VR6 runs 15x6 steelies and there really isn't very much flex esp. at 40psi, I'm on coilovers so it sits flat anyway

No problem, Ive heard some R specs have the more support in the sidewall aswell? Atm with the stockies and the eco tyres there is no grip at all and the car just pushes forward even with the coilovers.

are you planning on tracking the car or not?
87' MK2 GTI
13' MK7 TDI
race slicks and street tyres are very different when it comes to thier construction, & in the end sidewall flex and etc.
best idea would be to consult a tyre dealer [not bridgstone etc] but a proper racing tyre distributor and go from there.
double check before you decide on the tyre width though, as you wouldn't want a phatter tyre [if thats what you end up going for] to rub on the coilover. it's happened before
