Decreasing wheel offset

I'm concerned about running spacers due to legal implications.

I'm looking for a bit more width in the rear end and rather than adding spacers, I'm wondering if a section can be added to the wheel (eg, welding the spacer onto the wheel).

I searched, but nothing specific came up.

i think this is covered in the legal part of the wheel section somewhere.
Yes its a good idea, but it then takes you into another section of "modifying wheels" and im guessing it fails because it would be to hard to make safe, but thats just my guess

if your talking about widening an alloy wheel, im pretty sure its 100% illegal. if you were to do it i think you might have to get an engineer certificate or something but i dont know if anyone will certify it anyway...dunno how you'd go about doing that.

people widen steel wheels heaps though. just have it done by a reputable group

think hes talking about adding a spacer to the rim, so infact there is "nothing" between the wheel and the hub making it legal, but modifiying the wheel as above is pretty much a no no

Aren't spacers that bolt to the hub considered part of the hub though. Sure these are legal it's spacers that use oem or extended bolt that are frowned upon?

Think there would be mixed opinions on this, think these units are also more expensive.

Would love to hear from somone who could knows for sure if the spacer design is legal in Aust (specifically NSW, we seem to be over regulated)...

Any spacer or adapter is illegal in NSW.
Why? I don't know, if oyu got H&R ones which are TUV approved which is a standard over and above our own....still don't know why we are on our high horse about ADR's.

It's a VW, you might get fined/defected for them if you get caught doing something you shouldn't be but it isn't immediately obvious you are running spacers.

Insurance, should only really matter if the part was the known cause of a crash.

Welding to the face of wheels, re-sale cost of wheels?
Changing graint flow of wheels with heating and expanding in a concentrated are (weakening)?
Adding an extra stress point by welding 2 bits of metal together can not be a good thing also (Im sure boilies can do it professionally but it would be a solid amount of time and effort > cost)
