    Coilover spring replacement.

Found some coilovers for cheap but are for VR6, the spring rate will be too high/bumpy for my TDI.
My understading is that coilover springs are universal, so where should i look for spring replacements?

they are not all universal. look at a pic of a KW and a HT for example.
why not sure get right coilovers from the start. FKs landed for like $400-500, how can you beat that.
in theory the shock would be designed for those springs too... so might not work with a different rated/height spring

As dylan8 has said, nothing could be further from the truth.

If you alter the spring rate, then the dampers need to be revalved (or adjusted) to suit. In your case, the damping would end up far too harsh and you would have a very jarring ride (it'd be tied down well, though).

mmmm, my aim is to upgrade the stock to something firmer without a harsh ride. Gotta carry around a guitar tube amp etc.
If Fk's are hard to start with i'll still need to get them changed/revalved :S
I was looking at spring/shock but it's cheaper to get coils, plus adjustable hieght.

    flat mango,

i dont think there's any such thing as "firmer without a harsh ride" in vw scene - everything as far as i know, from just lowering springs, to cheap coilies, to mid range (mine, i guess), to top end, is going to rob you of stock-comfort-rideability.

also, why would vr6 springs be too bouncy for the 1.9tdi? i would have thought that they are similar weighted engines...

go to rays outdoors, and pick up an iron cast camping fry pan - that's the **** our engines are made out of. FUARGHKIENGH HEAVY!

i've yet to see someone HONESTLY post about coilies / spring damper kit that's just like stock. our cars are too small, and our wheelbases are too short - if you wanna up suspension ability, you're gonna drop cumfy wumfyiness. just my 20 yen.

I understand the ride quality will drop, but i have no idea how much of a drop it is.
The Harshest ride i've been in is a stock Evo 7.
My worry is for my gear, not me.

Get smaller wheels so that you can run taller profile tyres - and go skinnier so you can go even taller.
I don't regret doing this at all

I've got some VR6 brakes to put on in the future so I'll be on the look out for 5x100 wheels. I was thinking 15x7.5 and put 205/50/15 tyres. Or just the Stock VR6 wheels would do for dd until further mods

i would be interested in your progress...

dude, if you can get some FAT profile tyres (eg 185 65 or something) for your daily duties, with nice show wheels to be put on when you head interstate for shows, you're... WINNING!.

like kaanage says, a tall profile tyre gives you SO much room for just relaxing tyre pressures, and you're laughing. damn, man, i have a 50 profile on my car, and the difference between play day (42psi cold) and layzie around town (30psi or so all round) is huge.

that could be an other factor - tyre pressures. go get yoself a tyre gauge from autsbahns... its work the thirtee denirioes...

I've got a set of 15s from an A3. (6 spoke alloys) They are 5x100 and have 205/60/15 on them.
Let me know if you want them, going cheap

Also have a set of steelies with Golf hubcaps, also 15s 5x100 but no tyres on them.
