Thread: Can this wheel be repaired?

    Can this wheel be repaired?

    I'm looking for a bit of help, I do apologise in advance for all the questions but I'm really new to this. I've found a really cheap deal on some wheels that I think might look great on my MK5 Jetta (haven't been able to find any examples online though). I'm not after anything too flashy, just some wheels that look like they could have been OEM. I do have a few questions though;

    1. This wheel is in particularly bad shape, it's also letting out about 10psi a week. Does it look/sound repairable, if so, does anyone have a rough idea of what the cost might be?

    2. I'm terrible with numbers, I've tried so many offset calculators etc and read a million and one forum posts on fitting Mercedes wheels on VW's. I understand I may need 43mm lug bolts and 66.6 to 57.1 hub centric rings, but I was hoping there might be someone out there that could give me a definite answer so I could go ahead and get the parts (providing this wheel is repairable at a decent enough price).

    3. The tyre sizes that come standard with this wheel are 225/40/18 (front) and 255/35/18 (back), are there any alternatives to tyre sizes that may be cheaper? The 40ish profile mark suits me, there are way too many potholes in my area that I have trouble dodging.

    Thanks in advance

    The wheel doesn't look structurally damaged, just has lots of scratches.

    You'll need to take it to someone to see how much it's gong to cost.

    I've since found out the offset of these wheels;

    18 x 8 Front +50
    18 x 8.5 Rear +54

    I think +50 is ok, but will I need any major alterations to fit +54? I do plan on installing coil overs in the coming weeks, nothing too low, I just don't want it looking like a monster truck.

    10 psi per week loss - something is very wrong (assuming it is not the valve). The face damage looks largely cosmetic but will not be a cheap repair and may not match the other 3 wheels in colour.

    54mm v 50mm can be overcome with spacers if required but they are illegal.

    You can afford coilovers and you are looking at these wheels! Forget these and find a decent set of wheels.

    I actually completely agree, I've found a much better set since posting this for only a bit more. I don't know a lot about machining of wheels and thought it might be a easy fix but it just doesn't seem worth it.

    Do you how much of a noticeable difference there is between 54mm and 50mm? Is it the sort of thing that can be pointed out quite easily?

    Thanks for the reply.

    For the mk5 platform, those are quite safe fitments. Will definitely tuck in easily. There is more room in the rear of the mk5 so it shouldn't look too bad, just on the conservative side

    Specs should be fine.
    You are correct on the hub rings.
    The length of bolt varies between different merc wheels.
    But once they arrive it's easy to confirm.

    If it was just rash and they are cheap enough jump on them. If they are leaking your want to confirm if it's from a crack, buckle or leaking valve or puncture.
    Getting someone to 're roll and weld a crack can be a pain and not always effective if done incorrectly.

    I think they will look cool, nice oem upgrade. Thumbs up for thinking outside the box

    Thanks Dylan, might order some alum hub rings online - Doesn't seem like they have the size I'm after at Tempe Tyres (though that's only checking their site).

    I did find a better set, probably going to end up being a couple of hundred dollars more but there is definitely a lot less to worry about in terms of repairs etc.

    Can't wait to see them on, hopefully they look pretty sweet.
