Yeah it's a huge exaggeration. Would only be a couple of mm gap but enough to cause trouble.
It should be obvious but I guess if you aren't concentrating/in a rush when you put them on and have the assumption they should fit, once it's all tight you wouldn't think twice about it.
Yeah that picture is obviously very exaggerated but show's what would have happened. When I put the spacers on they seemed to sit fine, but the little screws which align the brake disc and hubs have broken up front so until I tighten up the wheels everything is loose. I mustn't have pushed the spacers and brake discs hard up against hub when I first test fitted the spacers, so everything looked like it was sitting fine, as there was probably another mm or two between the end of the hub and the spacer before I tightened it all up. When I put the wheel bolts in and tightened them up though it would have done what was in the picture but I wouldn't have noticed, as I wasn't even looking for it, didn't occur to me it might happen when I was putting them on.
