Aren't the tyres too big for a Mk1?
Hey all,
Just like Matt @ Camden's Compomotive fitting issue, my BBS RA's are proving a little difficult to stick on.
They're 7J 15 et25, and I thought this would be perfect. Brand new rubber on the front two (matching 195x55x15 on the rear), longer bolts and they're on. But they're sticking out a little too much for my liking on the front. First thoughts were to find someoen to machine the mounting plate and gain an extra 10mm or so. There seems to be plenty of room for brakes, but it seems like an awful lot of trouble for wheels that were ment to just pop on.
Does anyone have any thoughts? I had envisioned potentially including these in the sale of my Mk2, but lets hope that day doesn't come.
Here are a few pics.
Thanks in advance!

It's actually a Mk2. But maybe they're too big for that.
i dont know much about MK2 but it does sound big...
Wheels are going to look great on the MK2 by the way
my first thoughts are these rims are not mk2 GTI ones, I thought VW fittment ones was 6.5J and et35mm
maybe a 195/50/15 may be better or 185/55 R15 and ones without sidewall protection too as this makes them look really wide. The tyre looks too 'thick' (but i can only say that from your frist photo)

these wheels shouldnt have a problem, you have chosen a too tall of a side wall which makes the tyres bulge out, giving the look of wrong offsets
a 185/45r15 tyre would suit the proportions more
cheers

ok, geek time here lol
I have been playing with my tyre program here in work.
195/55 = 4.2" sidewall 23.4" diameter
185/55 = 4.0" sidewall 23.0" diameter (this is the stand VW fitment size)
185/45 = 3.3" sidewall 21.6" diameter (this is a small wheel, will put the speedo out by 6.3% 100kmph on your speedo = 93.7 ture speed)
I think it is the rim protection on your tyre making them look too fat IMO
wouldn't the correct size be a 195/50?
all I can say is just to check that the offsets stamped on the wheel are what you think they're meant to be.
I think it's probably roughly where it's meant to be, but it's a bit hard, with the tyre bulge..:\
Thanks so much Velly, Dom and Jarred. I really appreciate your feedback!
I've checked the wheels and the offset is definitely et25. So as you've all said, it's probably just the tyres that need replacing. I reckon I'll go for something like 185/45 or 185/50 and see how that fits. These wheels (bulge aside) look great, and I'd hate to sell them. Any suggestions for tyre places around St Kilda way?
Oh, and anyone wanting 195/55r15's (2x Brand New Conti's, 2x Dunlops), they're going cheap!
Thanks again lads.
i can get ya 185/45r15 nankang NS2's for under $500 brand new if your interested?
