17" rims for a golf r

Thats what I forsee as the only issue as well. If I can confirm they clear the brakes then it should be fine. I'm up in Cairns and travel to Moranbah every week for work, about 2000km round trip.

My first buckle was south of Townsville near green acres on the bridge, not a pot hole, it was the step up onto the bridge which buckled both fronts, pancaked them like a pice of sponge cake hitting a wall, both rims had a palm sized flat spot that had to be taken out, the other buckles happened on various pieces of **** road between cairns and Collinsville.

The one obvious one buckled on a pothole near Glenden. If you manage 30000km in your first 5 months of ownership and dont buckle a wheel I'll be impressed

Interestingly enough the bloke thats been taking them out for me has said that these rims are the softest he's ever come across, possibly why they are damaging so much on the roads. They'd probably be great on the auto strada or the autobahn but not much chop on good ol NQ Highways I'm afraid.

The roads are atrocious up here.

I too am a bit worried about the roads, i'm in mackay and waiting on my 3 door R to be delivered next week. I am looking at a set of BBS LM's or CH's for it and haven't decided on 18's or 19's yet. Its coming with silver 19" talladegas but i will be picking it up and going straight to a rim and tyre shop to change em. Not a fan of them at all.

my personal pick would be 18s with 235/45x18 but if I was going 17" I'd try for 245/45 or 235/50..... Not sure how it would go for clearance though.

235/35 R19 = 1973 mm


245/45 R17 = 1989 mm

245/40 R18 = 1992 mm

245/35 R19 = 1998 mm


235/50 R17 = 2037 mm

235/45 R18 = 2040 mm

235/40 R19 = 2047 mm


Some say the stock fitment of 235/35 R19 leaves very little room already, so there may be issues going bigger.

Probably, especially as you have to keep in mind the clearance between the tyre & the springs seat & also as the sidewall of the tyre gets bigger, it flexes side-to-side more

Reviving a dead thread here but I had to goto the 17"s and now that it's done I couldn't be happier, such a smoother ride and bugger all road noise with the added benefit of not having to dodge every little corregation on the road. Found a brand new set of 17" jetta rims and banged some rubber on them all for under a grand, clearances are fine and no rubbing so... So far so good

pics please! im guessing with that extra tyre sidewall, as long as you keep that rubber nice and shiny (be it satin or wet look), it'll look damn tough (im with kaanage - i like smaller wheels)
