Assuming you already have 17" Denver rims on your GTi, as came from the factory?
No point spending $1k + on new rims that are essentially the same, but one pro is that you can use your existing tyres.
Best place to get the 18"s, well, you found it. Keep an eye on the parts for sale thread. Going by what is listed you are looking at well in excess of $1k for rims alone.
Another option I have seen on a random car in Brissie was the Denver rims with the scoops painted black, from a distance looked like the detroits.
reps can be had for a lot less than that, unsure of quality. Try ebay or some of the wheel shops for options.

Yes factory standard. Spending 1k i'm happy to improve the look on my car. I love the look of Detriot rims.

So would 17s or 18s be better?

What's everyones opinion of Tempe Tyres for the Detroit rims?

Mate, for that much you should be looking at importing some nice rims from Tirerack or something.

Used sets come up here, also keep an eye on ozaudi forum

I would stick with originals than going with Tempe replicas for the sake of look. IMO Tempe replicas will make your GTI cheap and a waste of $1000, but of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder :p

$1500-$2000 you can get high quality lightweight japanese made Enkei wheels from ebay lsd motorsports or german made BBS CK and BBS CO 18x8 offset +44 from vividracing.

In fact, a set of lightweight Enkei RPF1 in 18x7.5 offset +48 from LSD motorsport in ebay is <AU$1350 landed.

alternatively, Enkei Lusso would be a decent upgrade .

    $1250 locally from:
    AutoTechnik.com.au - SITE UNDER DEVELOPMENT - Details : 1 Piece Construction - Lusso

yeah, if you are willing to spend >$500 a wheel at VW parts.... + tyres.

i know someone who is looking at selling his near new set with Dunlop Sports Maxx GT tyres, for $2500.
