    My 81 GLI cabrio

This is my cabrio, soon to be my daughter first car. Runs all the GTI specs. Dog used to sunbake on the roof but got hungry on christmas day! Getting a new roof and paintjob soon. Goes well.

Same colour as mine...Silver Diamond Metallic. Do 'fess up.. Where did you get the chrome/plastic bumper inserts? Can't believe they're original!

The front of your place looks like a v-dub dealers forecourt you lucky fella!
Take extra care when removing the rear window out of its surround as the steel frame is very prone to corrosion and the plastic insert is prone to snapping.(learn't from experience, with the right tools Ican break anything )
Where are you getting the new roof from?
Are you going for vinyl or mohair?
Nice old cabby by the way lucky daughter

Hey, thanks 16valver. At the moment the rear rubber doesnt have the insert in it. Is it the same as the normal stuff? I am getting the vinyl top I think with a new inner liner as well. Its an insurance job and the local trimmer is getting it. The top was only 18 months old. I have a new rear window seal to go in it. Yes, she is very lucky, but she is worth getting spoiled. You can't see the rhf guard on the Mk3 where she creased it! And before anhone asks, no, she hasn't driven the GTI yet! Due for her licence in Nov.
The cab is an english import and has the GTI c/r 5 speed. Its very original and hasn't been tampered with, apart from a recent valve grind.
Its a pleasure to drive & the dogs love it in the back!!!

if memory serves me correct on the inside of the car the rear screen is surrounded by alight steel channel, the vinyl of the roof sits inside this and is then held in place by a plastic/abs type frame that inserts into the steel frame and holds the vinyl in place.
If the plastic frame does break all is not lost as it can be secured with a couple of discreetly placed self tappers.
when doing this make sure the vinyl is pulled as tight as possible into the steel frame as if its loose the roof will look as though its inflated when on the move. Also make sure you get the frame nice and straight as crooked rear screens look terrible(you'd be surprised how often it happens)
