It's possible that in some (tighter) corners the lower mass of the Golf would give a better apex speed, but it'd have to be a pretty technical (read short) circuit or a VERY well tuned VW for a GTI to lap quicker than the AMG.
I haven't taken my wife's C63 Estate out to Wakefield yet but my Stage 1 Golf R gets left behind any time we're driving together - big car or not it's simply hard to argue with 352kW. At Temora last year she was only 7kph off the vMax of my old Gallardo over the 1000m sprint.
bmw23 - can't say I agree with leaving the poor old Merc outside but that's a great pair of cars you've got there! Did the CF grille and lower lip come with the car or have you added those yourself?
