Correct - I can't justify or afford to go changing clutches and gearboxes regularly for the sake of going 1 or 2 tenths of a second quicker. I guess that's where an auto or DSG is good - just plant them everywhere.

I clearly have too much mechanical sympathy lol

4 banger. Definetly get the manual - its a lovely gearbox and unless you spend alot of time in bumper to bumper traffic, there is no need for the DSG.

Ive only read of 2 or 3 instances with manual Golf R's having gearbox issues - one of those had issues from day 1 with clutch problems, the other failed (i think it was 4th gear that blew from memory) when on a race track. Another guy on the vwgolf.net.au forum has been running a stock clutch with an upgraded Garrett turbo and his clutch held out for about 6 months (of daily driving and a bit of racetrack abuse) before starting to slip. He is running about 80% more kw and nm through the box.

I dont abuse my car, and so far so good with my clutch and gearbox. In 12,000km's, and the car being tuned since 1,500km, the clutch has not slipped once. Its the additional torque from tuning the car that will potentially overpower the stock clutch (whichis the weakest link) and cause it to slip. With some mechanical sympathy and if you don't go too crazy on modifications then you should be fine.
