I always drove to events. I had full insurance with Shannons and because I am well over 25, (and almost over the hill) it cost less than $400 per year.
Golfwise had to tow me home once from Symmons Plains after I T,boned a spinning car at the end of the sweeper. Winter, no headlights left, front shoved across. Golfwise towed with TassieGTI's Mk4 while Micheal kept me company on the 200km tow home. Was an extremely reliable hard revving car.

Nice pics. I`m so gonna do Targa one year. i was there a week late this year. Surely a 76-83 Golf would be pretty competitive in that age and category still?

Yeah Loon but they have tightened up on the regs. Because the only Mk1 golfs with twincams were done by Okrasa, not VW, then you cannot use a twincam motor anymore without being protested against and being ruled out of the competition. There was a couple of mainlanders out to get us put out in Rallye of Burnie last year if we had beaten them. We snapped the exhaust cam in half 4kms into the first competitive stage so there was nothing done. These guys had contacted VW in Germany to find out when the twincam golfs started and were serious! So I have now sold the TC and Gunter awaits further developements.
A Golf would be super competitive in Targa, for sure. When I watch each year, some of the faster, older cars, look bloody quick but then I didnt have any problems in beating them in the 2 Rally Tasmanias that I did.
By the way, after snapping the cam I still managed to drive 350Kms home. Put another cam in it Monday & he was back to being my businesses parts pickup car. Got third in a large hillclimb down here the following weekend! Beat the GT2s ect!!

Always had a hankering to build a high revving 8v. They go pretty good stock. A well setup 8v Golf would be an awesome Targa car and you`d have some fun. Could probably drive home in it too.

What about a 76 Mk1 Polo, what engine would I be allowed in that?
It only weighs 650ks or so and I could get a 1.6 out of a new polo, or a 1.4 16v into it. for bolt in Hp.

It seems I've found myself a new hero,
If I F##k the wife off will you marry me?
Or at least let me be your daughter so I can have the cabriolet.
Even if I'm a 40 year old male I still look ace in a dress

Targa is not really kind on conversions.

It is a purist event, kit cars are accepted though. It was begun as a pedigree event, now they allow WRX/EVO's and that has changed the vibe alot...

A mk1 GTI would get an invitation to compete though...

One of Drews customers wanted to enter a Golf in Targa a while back and they refused it on the basis that the VW Golf had no sporting background.
What more can you say about the organisers.
The guy purchased an old 327 Monaro instead.
I recon the Golf would have beaten the Holden by half a day.

    Here's a good idea.
I'll build a gun Targa Golf and you forum guys throw in for the entry money.
