Hey 16valver, your never too young to start competing! I built gunter up when I was older than 40. You have to remember that the more you spend on the car, the less enjoyable I reckon. People expect more from you if you spend a squillionbucks. I reckon that over 6-1/5 years the all up cost of Gunter, not including entry fees & fuel was about $26000 and that includes building the car. I could have done Targa but for lack of dollars. Entry fee is over $5000, fuel, accomodation, running costs, service crew, there fuel, food, there accomodation, service crew vehicle & trailer should something go amiss. Tyres should last the week ok, 2 minute time penalty for each single tyre change ect. ect.
Then like you, factor in the wife & child..
I think its possible to build a single cam motor rhat would be in the rules that would run harder than a stock TC motor tho.
Sponsors please??? Have a proven chassis and a good track record.
Speaking of families, my wife only ever went to one thing that I competed in over the years, tho she always comes out for one day to watch Targa. My daughter would cross her arms & look bored when I would take her on three wheeling laps around Baskerville!

This should be in "General Chat".

Shame on you guys! You're doing a "Vortex"! This forum is for posting pics and discussing our rides.

Anyway, Andrew, the new forum will have a "Motorsport" forum. And to go Targaring you need big money which you get from big sponsors!

Its something that Ikeep bringig up when mrs 16valver is in a good mood,
But its the costs that stop me taking it any further.
Its expensive enough for a track day on my bike(worth every penny tho)
And a good few years ago used to do a few hillclimbs in an old Dutton b plus with a trumpy herald motor not quick at all but still more expensive than expected.
    cheers for the insight

Sponsorship  Been there...tried that You need a rich daddy or some very good contacts to make it in Motorsport these days! Spent some time with Fabian Coulthard and the backing he was getting before he started in the Porsche Cup was incredible!

    Anyway....back to pics hay!

Sorry Brackie, Dont know wot a "vortex" is but it doesnt sound too good!!Specs of Gunter are/were:
originaly an old 1.6 Passat motor, then std. 1.8 twin cam & the last year he had a std. 2l 9A twin cam. Mk3 TDI radiator & seperate oil cooler in summer.
5 speed GTI box & the last year & a half had a Quaife dif
Bilstein shocks with Kings micro springs
Lovells front & rear sway bars, GTI front disc & Mk3 rears. Silverstone competition tyres.
In rally spec he weighed 72Kgs.
I completed over 26,000 Kms in Gunter over the 6-1/5 years driving to & from events and doing pickups & deliveries for my business. Always got the looks around the streets! Will have to get him going in time for the Bug In next easter in Hobart.
Hope this fits this post ok Brackie, can put more piccies if allowed

    On topic

No probs. I was referring to another VW forum that from my observations is basically a chat room. Your last post is very much "on topic". What a lot of users of forums tend to forget is that topics are archived and stay on the database unless they're pruned (like classifieds are). In this way items can be searched for by ourselves and visitors to the forum. This is why you will find that most well run forums have a "General Chat" area where users can just shoot the sh*t without a specific topic to discuss. Every post uses up a chunk of server space that may not seem like much but adds up. This is why we had to move servers as we had exceeded our space with our previous host by 20% after only a year in operation. Our new host has allocated us 25X more space at no extra cost because he's a car enthusiast and motorsport competitor.
So Andrew, don't worry. Your contributions are enjoyed by all and it's great to have such an enthusiast in our membership!
