A Road Trip of 9257 km including stats

    Ok here it is.

Well I was hopeful of getting from Perth to Bendigo on 3 tanks (165 litres) of fuel. Unfortunately for the first 2000 km to Ceduna, there was a 15 knot headwind. I calculated this made a difference of at least 0.5l per 100 km - because driving in the opposite direction with the wind, the consumption droped by 1.0l per 100 km). So as a result we used 180.21 litres - 15.21 over.

The trip from Perth to Bendigo was for the 40th Annual National BUG-IN (a get together for Aussie VW Clubs and their members) over Easter. It is an event held in a different state each year and hosted by a home state VW Club. 2010 will be in Qld and 2011 in Perth.

Our route took us from Perth to Pt Augusta - there is only 1 way, then onto Crystal Brook, Spalding, Burra, Renmark, Mildura and onto Bendigo, a distance of 3437 km. We took our time by doing it 39 hours over 3 1/2 days. The car was entered into all events - took a Show N Shine trophy and got a bit dusty on the Sunday. After the BUG-IN there was a 5 day 1500 klm trip to Echuca, Corryong, Bright, over Mt Hotham to Omeo, Lakes Entrance and Melbourne. We then drove the Great Ocean Road and the Coorong to Adelaide from the southeast. The final leg took us to Mintaro in the Claire Valley and back to Pt Augusta and home to Perth.

Anyway here are the important stats.

    Total Distance - 9267.0 km
    Average speed - 81.3 kph
Consumption - 514.48 litres of diesel
    Cost $643.42.
    Average Fuel consumption - 5.56l /100 km
Best - Mildura to Bendigo 4.8l /100 km
Worst - From bottom to top of Mt Hotham 10.1l /100 km

5.5L/100km is nothing to sneeze at though!

Wow, that's one hell of a drive!! So there were 2 of you sharing the driving? I mean, I love driving, but that would wear down even the most oily of bloods. Thanks for all the stats, very interesting!

Could you go into a bit more detail about your speed? Just wanted some more info because if you drove at a constant 81.3kph for the entire journey, I dare say your figures would be under 5l/100km!
What was your average speed on the open, flat roads? What percentage of the trip was at this cruising speed, what percentage was tough-going (uphill, winding, etc). Also, what made Mildura-Bendigo so efficient?

    Cheers.

Very impressive I must say! It really puts things into perspective especially when you own a gas guzzling VR6 which averages 14L/100 But then again I do have somewhat of a lead foot
