What should we get? TDI 9n or 6r polo or V/VI Golf

My girlfriend wants a new car. She still hasn't answered my question "WHats wrong with us sharing the Mk1?" so I have no idea what is motivating her but anyway she has her mind set on it.

To make the best of a bad situation, I have taken a positive position and am trying to guide and inform her decision. Unfortunately another Mk1 is not an option (again, she hasn't justified her opposition to this - all I hear is bla bla airconditioning blaa bla doesn't break down bla bla isnt rusty bla bla can overtake bla shiny new car smell bla bla).

So I am interested in the opinions of those on this forum to assist us decide between, and know what to pay and look for, in the following cars:

    9n 1.9TDI polo
    6r 66TDI polo
    Golf V 2.0 TDI
    Golf VI 77TDI
    Golf VI103TDI
    Golf VI bluemotion

I am leaning towards the 9n 1.9 because it has more in common with my Mk1 that the rest, and it will be the cheapest but also the oldest and with the highest kms.

Should we avoid particular technologies (DSG Pumpe Duce, etc)?

Is an older TDI going to be more reliable and resilient over 100,000kms?

    Thanks in advance

Smart girl ...and she will be safer in a new car than in MK1, that's for sure.

GolfVI 103TDI or Bluemotion, and I would prefer CRD over PD. A new car will last you longer time than secondhand plus you get the warranty and you can extend the 3 years to 6 years.

I'd avoid the 6r 66TDI polo due to the DPF issues (frequent regens / higher than expected fuel consumption) when used in city driving.

The Golf models are great if you want more space than a Polo but will cost more (obviously) so it's up to you to weigh up this.
The 77 and Bluemotion will feel VERY slow vs the 103 Mk V and VI. The MkVI models will be MUCH smoother (petrol-like?) than the MkV and 9N3 Polo (CR vs PD) but will have DPFs that could be a long term expense.

The Pumpe Duse motors are well and truly proven to be rock solid reliable aside from cam bearing wear in VERY high mileage models except for the 125kW version fitted to the GT MkV Golf (+ Passats and Audis) which have injector failures. A couple of the 103kW PD owners have also reported the same failure but this seem atypical.

The 6-speed DSG fitted to the MkVI 103 is a well proven component too unless you are unlucky and get one with troublesome mechantronics (shift control system).

We have a 9N3 TDi and a MkVI 103 and are very happy with both (especially since I had the 9N3 remapped with a Viezu V-Switch).

    Hope this helps.

Ahh, thats what all the bla was about... SAFETY!

As we live out in the sticks, I am not going to lose too much sleep over particulate emissions.

I am leaning towards a MkV 2.0TDI with a 6 speed or a 1.9TDI Polo. Our budget is realistically under $20K. Unrealistically I would like a Golf VI GTD.....

As for a new car, the most we could stretch to would be the 66TDI polo. Anyone like/dislike this car? I think it looks nice.... not as nice as a beige Mk1 though.

I'd get whatever engine DOESN'T have a DPF. I'd lean toward the 9n3 TDI as its a proven drivetrain (in the mk4) and its a pretty nice jigger to drive (even if it is a bit more clattery)

See my comments above about the 6R Tdi

Go the 1.9 9N3 TDi as you can then get some aftermarket extras added (radio w bluetooth, remap, weathersheilds...)

I'd have a look at this one (Barloworld) or this one (Sth Yarra VW). These Pacific models have some nice extras over the normal ones (trip computer, alloys, leather steering wheel).

The 1.9 has the massive advantage of the USA, in that you can pretty much find out ANYTHING about it on TDIclub and there's a plethora of aftermarket parts available. The yanks have really worked that engine out.

The 2.0 is good in 103kw form, not too much goes wrong. No flippin DPF. A nice machine combined with the high tech DSG, but I'd hate to own a very high milage DSG, would be an expensive rebuild. Stock ECU 103 should go forever, chipped not so much.

The MK6 is great in that it has common rail, but it too has the most emission stuff on it, is going to be expensive, and common rail is quite sensitive to fuel quality. Questionable high pressure fuel pumps / exhaust flaps. They all have the troublesome DPF too, albeit a better designed one. I'd love a MK6 GTD too, but not different enough to what I have for the debt I would have to go back into, but with the active suspension, sure are a desirable machine.

For a girlie, if you don't need a big car, I'd go a 1.9 Polo TDI.

Yes and no. The Golf MkV GT TDi with the 125kW engine has a DPF but I'd steer clear of this model due to the injector failure issues (see the big thread on this). Otherwise you are correct.

If you need the space, go the Golf but otherwise have a really good look at the Polos that I linked to.

Yep, in MKV VW only the GT suffers the DPF. Skoda had it back then too, as did some of the better Audi's, but now all diesels that meet Euro 6 are DPF equipped ( with better DPF's mind you )
