    THanks guys!

We are looking at some Polos and Golfs later this week........

Is there any variance in engine types within models? What engine codes?

I'd go the 9N3 but I am biased. I can get down to 4.0l/100km It is quick enough at the moment to surprise most of the larger 6 Cylinder cars out there.

Mine has had 150,000km on it in two years and it is going strong and it has had a very hard life although it has been serviced regularly.

I have the 6R TDI with all the bad bits which will end up costing me money; DPF, DSG, and every option which was available at the time of order.

I haven't found the fuel consumption to be as good as quoted; I am running around 5.8 having travelled nearly 7,000kms. As for the car, I love the engine and gearbox; but as everyone has said there is that lingering feeling I am going to be stuck with big bills in the future. In the first few weeks of ownership I noticed the regeneration process; but I haven't really noticed it since [Except for the smell sometimes when you stop and get out]. I am amostly a city driver and really found the car to be brilliant [Except for the fuel consumption]; on the long trips its even better, especially in the tight stuff.

I have driven both the manual and DSG 6R TDI's, and wouldn't go past the DSG now; but the manual isn't bad if you are looking to save a few dollars on a new car.

As for old versus new, I find the styling of the new model an improvement over the old; but if you are looking for something cheap, reliable and still a generally good car I would probably go for the old model.

The Golf models are great if you want more space than a Polo but will cost more (obviously) so it's up to you to weigh up this.
The 77 and Bluemotion will feel VERY slow vs the 103 Mk V and VI. The MkVI models will be MUCH smoother (petrol-like?) than the MkV and 9N3 Polo (CR vs PD) but will have DPFs that could be a long term expense.

The Pumpe Duse motors are well and truly proven to be rock solid reliable aside from cam bearing wear in VERY high mileage models except for the 125kW version fitted to the GT MkV Golf (+ Passats and Audis) which have injector failures. A couple of the 103kW PD owners have also reported the same failure but this seem atypical.

The 6-speed DSG fitted to the MkVI 103 is a well proven component too unless you are unlucky and get one with troublesome mechantronics (shift control system).

We have a 9N3 TDi and a MkVI 103 and are very happy with both (especially since I had the 9N3 remapped with a Viezu V-Switch).

    Hope this helps.

We looked at a MY09 Polo Pacific today, engine code AXR. Is there any chance that this motor has a DPF? THe sales guy reckons that it does (probably because he thinks that we want dpf).

    Thats awesome, thanks guys.

We put down a deposit and hopefully should be driving it some time next week!

I am already modifying it in my mind....... VNT17 so my 1.6TD can have a VNT15... Hee heeee

However, My Mk1 TD MUST ALWAYS BE FASTER!!!!

Unfortunately we couldn't find a Polo in Mexico Beige so I will have to finish my red GLD project car so they match.
