That's the engine mate.
hey I am a total noob with VW's in general...let alone turbo diesels. Was wondering what the part is:
Underneath the cover is some sort of wastegate looking device that is plumbed back into somewhere...Its sitting on a silicone pipe haha. I am pro with knowing how my diesel works![]()

it could be anything... that's quite an unspecific arrow... coolant piping? intercooler piping? inlet?
take a better photo and it'll be easier to identify![]()

I thought the oil filler positioning was obviously difficult enough for VW service staff not to spill any when refilling it from the front of the engine, imagine how much they'll be able to spill all over everything on the CR engine when the filler is at the rear of the engine
Technically speaking I know it's actually on the right hand side on PD engine and left hand side on the CR engine, I am referring to looking at it from the front of the car

Yep, the EGR valve motor. The EGR enters through a moving valve, and that's the motor that closes and opens it. Similarily, on the next part down, the "throttle" flap ( not that it is one really ) the motor for this is on the opposite side.
And no you can't just unplug it, tried that. Still nutting that one out.
