Vibration

Can anyone confirm for me that a vibration I feel through the steering wheel of my GLD at idle and stationary is likely to be engine mounts?

Almost certainly. You can check them individually and replace those that are suspect, or just replace the whole lot. I'd recommend the latter. She'll probably never idle as smoothly as a petrol model, but hey!! It's a diesel! They way you can check is to put a trolley jack under the motor with a block of rubber on it. Just take the weight of the motor/transaxle (be careful) and if the vibration goes away you can suspect the mounts.
We use 4WD motor bikes on the farm and we bought a Polaris with a Yanmar diesel. It pulled like a schoolboy and ran for ever on a tank of diesel. But eventually it literally shook itself to bits. Our 90hp Deutz tractor broke an oil line yesterday, again from vibration. That's diesels!

Its usually the one on the timing belt end which is a swine to change, or the one at the back on the backside of the gearbox.

Having just replaced the engine mount at the timing belt end I can report that it fixed most of the vibration through the car and is indeed a swine to change.
