This is becoming so common that RACQ here in QLD now have a fleet of fuel extraction vans. They specialise in fixing unleaded in a diesel.
They have all the gear to pump empty the tank and flush the fuel lines, then replace the fuel filters etc.
My wife put 18 litres of ulp into her Jetta 125TDI. Luckily (or unluckily depending on which way you look at it) she was topping up the tank before she headed off on a trip. She drove about 14 kilometres and when she noted that it was running a bit funny she suddenly realised what she had done. By the time she rang me, while still driving, she was virtually home. So she drove nearly 20 k's in total. We then got it towed to my mate's place. He took out the in tank fuel pump to drain the tank. We put diesel into it and away she went. Got lucky I think but it does show that they are still a pretty robust engine. At around 230,000k's at the time.

I bought an adapter for my wifes ix35 highlander so she couldn't put petrol in it, and chipped her whenever she mentions the word petrol.
I'm a tanker driver and see this quite regularly, amazingly I have seen people trying to blame the servo for their error. General consensus is if you just drain it without running it no problems. driving it with a petrol blend can quite easily destroy your engine.
Another error is people with diesels filling their fuel tanks with Adblue , workmates mate did this and destroyed his Nissan Patrol's engine.
Wow. I didn't think it was possible from what I'd read to mis fuel VW diesels.
"Beginning with 2013 vehicles, VW redesigned its fuel fillers to accept only diesel nozzles. Gasoline nozzles are smaller than diesel nozzles. But with one of the new TDI fuel fillers, if a driver tries to insert a gasoline nozzle instead of a diesel nozzle, the fuel tank gate will remain closed"
Is this not true?
Yep my wife did this this to a diesel mark 6 highline did not start it thank god
I pushed it across the road to the ultratune that was on other corner got tank drained filled with diesel and away she went cost was steep as i had to get them to drop what they were doing to fix it
But so long as motor was not started or run just drain tank fill with new diesel and count yourself lucky

Ha ha fought this battle in 2007 with plenty of enthusiasts, then I was into heavily modding GM's finest and drag racing them.
I put ANY 98 fuel in it usually Caltex Vortex , The 7-Eleven 98 fuel at the time was Shell Optimax without the Lubrizole additive which sometimes specced out at 100ron. The BP Ultimate for a long time was the same as the Mobil 98 but with a different additive in Sydney. It came out of the same tank just had different additives in it sometimes. The 95 fuels get shared and swapped by the majors with additives being the only difference. There are exceptions to this and depends on where you live and which is the closest Refinery/Terminal.
I strictly use Caltex 95/98 from 1 site as I know they have high turnover and any water is regularly removed from their tanks. All of the big company sites have monitors to check for this.

I was under the impression that Australia only had one remaining refinery (in WA), and that the vast majority of our fuels were imported already refined.
Cheers
