Any VW technicians and mechanics able to assure me the diesel is okay?
I note VW UK has withdrawn it from sale...

Me too - fly to Melbourne on Friday to get mine - still looking forward to it,
Cannot believe VW would let it go on unresolved
When is yours due ? What's the wait for ?
Yikes!!
It sounds to me like the DPF is underspec'd for the engine/car and i wonder if the surging is due to auto regens while all those people are driving at slow speeds.
And I wonder if they'd get mileage like the official figures if the DPF was deleted.
I REALLY hope this doesn't apply for our (hopefully more open) roads.
Best wishes for you guys. The rest of the car (as the UK users stated) is excellent - much more refined than my older 9N3 (with the noisy old 1.9-litre TDI unit)
Sure sounds like the DPF during regen cycles, as extra fuel is injected to heat the DPF up, but it is late in the cycle and usually idle isn't affected, my TDI is a surgey, noisy mongrel to drive during a forced regen, and it's going to use extra fuel for sure. I still think selling a diesel for quiet, inner city, short trip driving is a huge mistake, purely from the DPF point of view.

Mine is due to land in Australia on Saturday; the order reason was because I wanted to get a few options and no dealers had cars coming with the spec I was after; been just under a six month wait so can't wait to get it.
As for the issues being discussed here; does anyone have a sense of what short trips are classed as? 500m, 1km, 10km, 50km? I am hopeful that the car will arrive and not have issues; I haven't heard any local issues, but then again I haven't run into many users on the forum that have ticked the diesel box on the order sheet.

Spoke to VW AUS via email. 15km and under per day and they recommended petrol. They said any dealer would honor one or two free particle filter clean outs for free. So shouldn't be an issue for most of usAs for the issues being discussed here; does anyone have a sense of what short trips are classed as? 500m, 1km, 10km, 50km? Could be an issue for me; I think we would struggle to do 20km a day. Wonderful to get this news a couple of days out from the arrival of my new car after waiting so long. Having said that, an issue or two with the Polo is probably easier to live with than the compromise I would have needed to make with other cars in this price range.
Thanks for raising the issue; enjoy you TSI!

Here's a recent South Africa post. The uk car delivers less power because of an extra filter, and the recent DPF upgrade cured his hiccup - he reconned the uk extra filter is killing the little dub. So should not be an issue here...but ask your dealer about the upgrade to the filter controller...

all this nonsense..... i would have thought the oldest prank in the book (sticking a banana/potato in the tailpipe of a car) and the result would be lesson 1 in automotive engineering 101.
DPF
for the benefit of us all, can everyone just try to ignore the generally harmless soot in future? DPF's are becoming a classic example of public opinion causing ridiculous engineering solutions to fit a problem that has hardly any real negative consequences. (ESPECIALLY when you consider how fuel efficient the engine could be without the darned DPF)
