    supercharged diesel...uberkomprimierter

    hey everyone,

well, thanks to mollins my dream to finally give the little 1500 rattler some go might soon come into being... by way of an AISIN AM300 supercharger (from a subaru pleo/vivio).

its a neat little unit and im figuring if i gear it to about 2.2:1, i'll be having about 10-11psi to help push her along.

now i know golf loon has seen a supercharged diesel before (not vw) but im just wandering of what you guys reckon about all this... the guys on the vwdiesel forum are very positive about it, so im enthused greatly already...

    It's been done!

(Moved this thread to the "Diesels" forum but left a shadow in MK1 etc so that petrol heads can contribute!)

Mazda sold Capella (626) supercharged diesels for years. VW are now going with turbo/supercharged motors to get the best from both (instant response from the super, big torque from the turbo).

From what I've heard the Mazdas were great when the motor was new, but as it wore the problems came along. They spat out heads and the boost exacerbated blow by problems.

There's a mob in the States that sells a low volume supercharger that is suitable for petrols but not diesels (my old brain can't think of their name atm!)

Anyway, be careful of the additional stresses that blowing will generate. It's OK with a motor in good condition but I'd be wary of doing it to an old one

yeah, i had thought about extra stresses etc.... that was my main concern in the beginning. however, all the guys from the vwdiesel forum reckon it'll handle boost now worries... that said, im still not sure. however, theres a lot more to be said (in my books) for a vw diesel than a mazda one... still...

Sounds like a good idea. You can get toyota roots-type blowers for cheap from jap importers. There is a 1.2l displacement unit off an early MR2, and a 1.4l displacement off a Crown. The other good thing about these ones is that they have an electro-magnetic clutch like an air-con compressor so you can actually turn the blower on or off. They have there own oil so you don't need to plumb up an oil line. I have heard of people using them on large diesel 4x4s but they have to spin them a lot for the large 4l motors. On a 1.9l petrol you can get 10psi by spinning it at 1.4:1 though.
