Found this article on Mahle making steel diesel pistons for passenger cars - apparently will be in someones production cars in 2014. Smaller lighter pistons will result in smaller engine blocks or to start with lower friction losses with longer conrods.
I think it's meant to be behind a paywall, but you can see the first two pages in the preview.

There is less information on the Mahle web site.
Amazing that significant engineering progress continues even with such basic parts as pistons.
