I was of the belief that it was illegal to remove the Cat from your exhaust system and it can come with a $10,000 fine due to EPA laws.
Anyone know any good exhaust places in sydney that can make custom down pipes? I want to improve the flow and remove the cat on the TDI.
I'd love a 2.5" straight through (maybe with 1 muffler!) but the cost of getting a whole custom system isn't justifiable just yet!

Hitech Mufflers, Australia's best Tyre service and Campbletown exhausts can do custom stuff even carline mufflers on the north sure can do it (they make MRTs exhausts). We've used all of these at some stage. The cheapest would be Aussie's best as the young guy there is very keen to do anything unusual. I think you mean DPF though. Big fine for removal of said items and I think its alot more than 10K![]()
Only the mkV GT TDI or MK6 TDIs have a DPF, and if you have a 103kw jobbie the main restriction is the turbo. If you want bang for buck replace the first axle level muff with something decent as this is the restrictive resonator and ditch thr final pancake alltogether. 42 draft designs have a beautiful rear pipe and magnaflow muff for 175 US. I am quite keen on one. All a dump pipe will do on an otherwise stock TDI is allow quicker spool but the 103 has limited turbo vane control compared to the GT so I would expect overboosting issues which has lead to several 103s popping turbos now.

Main reason for a dump pipe is to remove the cat (which afaik isn't a legal requirement for a diesel) and allow the exhaust to exit faster which will mean lower EGT's. This is reportedly the reason for turbos going on the 103kw. (main bearing failure seem to be a common theme, which is what i had! Lots of completely stock ones are blowing too by themselves!) Apparently the turbos are good for 180hp or about 1.6bar of boost continuous. They do spike when boosting but I've had my map adjusted now so it's 1.5bar max.
I wanted a 2.5" all the way through maybe with a centre resonator but nothing else, but I think it'll be a bit expensive! It's more about freeing it up and getting the hot gases out as fast as possible!

Diesels still produce normal pollutants, and yep, cats albeit slightly different ones are legally required depending upon production year. The DPF front section is actually the cat, the rear 2/3 is particle trap in those equipped with one.
Also, I'd suggest you get under the car and do some measuring, the stock GT exhaust is full 2.5" mandrel bend. Except for the DPF and resonator, it'd flow pretty darn well!

I've asked before and was told that for a diesel (obviously not for a petrol), taking off the cat wasn't an issue, legally. Hmmm.
Well if the GT is a full 2.5" setup then i'm going to get measuring tonight. Mine is a normal 103 TDI.... Sure would save a lot of effort because I can just get a nice straight through downpipe, get the 2 mufflers removed and a different one added in and it'd be sorted!
Apparently it CAN make the car a bit more smoky, which for me is bit of an issue at the moment, it does look really smoky at night. During the day it's pretty good. But right now i'm doing a lot of very short journeys, so that's not helping!

I'd bet the 103 has exactly the same exhaust pipe, as it's commonly 2.5 inch mandrel across the GTI as well, and diesels flow more air for less hp.
I have a nice, now not going to be used APR, 3" in 2 x 2" out muff if you want. Needs mounting brackets, and a bit of pipe work as it's the drivers side rear one on the twin tip 3" APR system. One of many bits I've collected in my quest for Frankendiesel, and they are supposed to stop drone at 91db or something from memory - check the APR site if interested.
Any muff will work, diesel's don't need anything specific, just they tend to sit lower in the revs down where drone more readily happens.
