Hi All,
Signed the deal today and in around 8 weeks I will be taking delivery of my 08 Golf TDI GT Sport. White in colour, 6 speed manual, sunroof, mats, mudflaps, slimline weathershields. Left the XR6 with them today as a deposit. My very first brand new car, I can hardly wait

Welcome to the Diesel Club! That's a lively car you've bought. Sure the Ford is too, but not nearly so nimble and agile. I was talking to Andrew (gtimk5) the other day and he said that he did his first flash of a TDI and the results were excellent, I would guess up to the performance of the gt. I intended to go down that road myself this year, but the opportunity didn't arise.
The only down side of diesels at the moment is the price of fuel. I was devastated to read a newspaper article (I think by a usually reliable and fair writer ...Ewan Kennedy??) who compared the current running costs of a diesel model against its petrol equivalent. After doing the sums it's actually more expensive to own the diesel! A large part of that is the price differential of petrol/diesel and I would guess that he would be comparing standard unleaded not the premium unleaded that most cars require these days. Also, depreciation and buying price come into it. I suppose resale value wasn't considered as these were ongoing cost calculations.
As for me?? I don't care as I wouldn't buy anything BUT a diesel! (anyway... I'd have to change my username to "octane" )
I know the petrol equivalents would probably be built to the same standard as the diesels but I would be interested to see how well they run in comparison once they have 200,000 km + on the clock. Going off the amount of driving I do at present, I would expect that I will have owned mine close to 15 years by the time I get 200,000 k's up, but then again from what I have read about these beasties I may not want to get out from behind the wheel......
thats awesome mate, im a big fan of the GT TDi, its a true diesel hot hatch and the chip sends the power sky rocketing!!!
