    shameless proponent of biodiesel....

ok, so you all know i am, but just to give you another idea of where i'm coming from....

over the long weekend, we did a trip from Gosford to Wagga Wagga and back.

i ALWAYS use 100% biodiesel sold from a Metro fuel station in west gosford, for my daily commute to Hornsby (130km round trip).

so, with a topped off tank, we set off to wagga early saturday morning, and had a lovely drive out through Bathurst, Cowra, Young, Temora, down to Wagga. 550ish km. used a tad over 1/2 tank.

then, on monday morning, filled up with normal dino-diesel from a big station in wagga where they had hi-flow for the trucks. my folks were with us in their mk1 golf diesel (also bio-users) and it was funny to have us both parked at the diesel bowser filling up at the same time in hte early morning gloom.

I squeezed in 31ish litres (i worked out consumption of 5.3l/100km for the trip down) and we set off once again.

so the trip home went ok too, but i couldnt help but feel like the car just felt a bit gutless.... and noisy! seemed like our previously serene drive was intruded upon by a loud drone from the front, and now, 2 days later and 2 commutes later, i'm SURE of it. the car is smokier, louder and doesnt feel right.

so, my point after all that, is this: i really, truely, whole heartedly believe that at least for an older diesel, you'd be mad not to use biodiesel if you could. truth is, i've been using it for so long now that i've adjusted the injection timing a little to make it run nicely on it, and the car just seems to love the stuff! the whole time i've used it, i've only done the normal, scheduled fuel filter changes, and never had any cold starting issues (with my mk3).

just a little story from me. i can't wait to get home tonight and fill up on 100% bio again, shlould bring me down to less than 5% dino diesel in the tank.

What are they selling the bio for.
The metro at Doyalson had bio for about a week 6 months ago, then nothing.

Running my ute on 50/40/10 dino/wvo/ulp. No difference in power or economy,
but much quieter and a bit more smoke when cold.

The last week doylo has been selling diesel for 10 cents cheaper than ulp.

Can any diesel vehicle use this? I know with the work ute the dealer told us not to use biodiesel at all. Is there a specific reason for this or are they just telling hokey?
    Cheers,

That could explain why the engine was noisier and less power more smoke.

P.S. I thought that you make your own bio.

in my previous experience with IDI diesels, a little advance always makes it noisier, but never a loss in power or increase in smoke - mind you, the loss in power i think im feeling is probably more of a 'difference' in the torque curve with the different fuel. what i have done is advance the timing just a little - i.e. to the advanced tolerance of within spec.

my dad does make his own bio, and has been doing so for about 6 years. his fuel is beautiful - clear, sweet smelling (i'm serious) and makes the car run very smooth.

the pump bio is a little more on the nose, but seems to be just as smooth and i have less trouble with cold starts than dad does.... could be advance or glow plug differences though.

    Good on you mate.

Been a while since i visited the forum, and i'm glad to hear there's still some "Grass roots dieseling" going on.

Maybe i'll have to give my 1.9 IDI puggy a go on the biodiesel.
