Anyone looking to upgrade to an R32 rear bar has to be warned - its a very expensive exercise. Not only are all the parts extremely expensive but you'll need to get some spray painting done and modifications to the exhaust to fit. If you're still interested then read on.

Here's a parts diagram of what you need to get -



The parts you need are

16. Rear Lower Valance - VW-1K6807433EGRU - $$835.36!!!!
15. Exhaust Surround - VW1K68075689B9 - $70.73
14. Right Securing plate - VW-1K6807739 - $12.90
Left Securing plate - VW-1K6807740 - $12.90
27. Towing eye cover - VW-1K6807441E9B9 - $13.51

Some say you also need the foam insert behind the bumper bar but I was advised that there's no stock of these left in the world and I ended up not needed it anyway in the installation. You'll also need the left and right reflectors that don't seem to be shown on that diagram but they are -

Left Reflector - VW-1K6945105A - $14.03
Right Reflector - VW-1K6945106A - $14.03

Total sum of just parts is $973.46. This are prices from VW Australia. I know you can import the bar from overseas from companies like TM Tuning or ECS Tuning but with the massive freight cost it doesn't work out much cheaper. If you do go down this path make sure you get a Euro Spec R32 rear bar and not US because the Euro's number plate slot is wider like our Aussie versions and you need the valance to match up with your existing top bumper section on your golf.

I was lucky enough to buy the whole kit brand new and genuine from ebay for $300 but bargains like this are rare - I searched for about 2 years before I came across it and of course snatched it up immediately.

You will of course have to get the lower rear valance spray painted to match to your cars colour because it comes primed and ready for paint. Once painted its an easy installation - just a case of removing your old valance and putting your new one in.




You'll be happy to see above that there's room for your original exhaust to poke out so no need to modify your exhaust prior to installation but you cannot click in the R32 exhaust surround in place - the standard exhaust block it so you'll need to cut them off.



My plan is to perform a complete mufflerectomy on the car by removing the entire muffler and just having a straight through exhaust. Initially I had a few reservations fearing that it would be too loud or I'd loose performance however I was re-assured that being a trubo diesel the exhaust is already heavily muted by the turbo, catalytic converter and the DPF filter so it wouldn't.

So...I did the chop and threw it out. I started the car without the muffler and just a cut pipe and I'm happy to report that it doesn't sound one bit different - I actually couldn't believe that there was no difference looking at the size of that stock muffler. Makes you wonder what the hell its there for. I would guess that the stock muffler must weight at least 15kg so just getting rid of it for weight saving purposes is recommended.

If you look at the openings where the new centre exhausts are to exit you'll notice that there's a small metal plate and a heat guard that seems to be blocking the exists.



You can easily bend these bits back with some plyers - they feel like pieces of tin and can be easily folded back to make room for the new exhaust.



Now all I need is some nice exhaust tips and a Y section to join onto the stock 2.25" exhaust pipe. About the biggest tips you can fit in the R32 surround would be 4" so I bought a pair of Magnaflow 4" to 2.25" Double Wall exhaust tips -

You can go all out and do the system in stainless but considering you don't really see it I just got a simple Y section fabricated up from steel with a base plate at the end so I can bolt it up to the stock pipe, welded on some rods to that I can utilise the stock exhaust rubber hangers for securing the system and spray painted it with an exhaust temp resistant silver.








End result I think looks fantastic. It still sounds completely stock and there is no noticeable decrease in performance, if anything she's probably a bit faster now thanks to the weight reduction.

I have been reading your thread, just a few questions, are you still interested in selling your bluefit unit, will it work on a 103 kw diesel motor that’s in my 07 Passat? If so, how much? Where did you get the APR air intake from, I have emailed allot of sellers from America, and they all come back with the "can not sell into the Australian market".

Set up an account with Shipito.com or similar, you send the package their warehouse in the US and they forward it on to you. You should be able to buy directly from the APR website.

It can be a bit of a pain to set it up as you have to send them scans of your licence, passport etc. but you can use it for so much stuff.
