OK, you're right diesel here is not as good as it should be and it was terrible before 1/2006 then it started to improve. It is possible that some fuel stations have really bad quality diesel (not maintaining their storage tanks), which would contribute to the sludging you saw. All my customers are offered Moreys Diesel Smoke Killer, during service and all of them get 1L bottle, which usually gets them through to the next service, some buy more when they run out, many of them started to use BP after I explained them why. Moreys Diesel Smoke killer is recommended for the DPF and I closely monitor our Touareg and 2 Tiguans DPF loading and I'm amazed.

My bad for not reading or doing a search on the subject on here. Being at the coal face i saw this and instead of what most dealer techs do and just fit a new one i was looking for a solution to a "well known" problem and thought i would post up a pic. That all said i do really appreciate all the feedback cheers guys.
I did " Fix" a V6 Touareg last week with an EGR valve stuck and what would normally be replaced, the guy couldnt wait for the back ordered part, so went through the pain of removing it, not a 2 minute job on a Treg, and used Subaru cleaner for ages on it and it unstuck, luckily the Elec side of the valve seemed to cope with trying to work against the coal and manged to keep it alive. All good.
I personally still think the diesel over here is crud as is the Petrol whether it contibutes or not, im sure it does but thats "my " opinion. But anyway as i say i really appreciate the feedback

    Cheers again

No disrespect intended jmac - i know you know your stuff but sometimes people can do a lot of work and still never manage to come across something anyway

I've cleaned out one that was worse than your picture, can't say how many km it had on it though.

In the end it will come down to a lot of different factors - fuel, oil, driving style, trip distance etc. If I had to put money one one of those being the most important, I'd say driving style. Some drivers like to putt around and labour the engine at low revs - makes lots of soot and as you know also causes a lot of blowby past the rings causing extra vent gasses.

Sorry if my reply came across as a bit terse - like I say no disrespect intended at all, we're all friends here.

I did mine at 100,000kms and it wasn't all that bad, BUT I had, had the intake cleaned not too long before, and ALSO turned down the EGR values to basically none on VAG-COM. (good article about it on tdi club)

Surely it wouldnt be just bad quality diesel, itd have to be the design of the engine? Sooty exhaust fumes mixing with oil vapour to create that tar like substance?

do you reckon that turning it down would via vag com would be a necessary pre-requisite for installing the race pipe?

i guess im asking in the context of limp mode due to no EGR detected/ other operation niggles... as we've discussed at tim's place before, we can always just texta over the illuminated check engine light

No I only did it before I had the EGR delete pipe in my hands.

You completely disable the EGR by taking it out anyway, so no need to turn it down on VAG COM
