Polo TDi economy up and down.

Hi. I've got an '11 Polo tdi auto 16,500km and commute about 100km each way each day. Average economy about 4.5l/100km with speed between 102 and about 106 depending on traffic. All highway and 6 turns door to door. Fuel up at the same truck stop about every 4 days, BP. The last couple of runs had the fuel at about 5l/100km which is about a 10% increase. So, this morning for the last 10km I drove a bit more spirited and ran at just under 3000rpm, which was about 140 to 160km/hr thinking that maybe the dpf needs a flush. This arvo's run was back to about 105km/hr and economy was back down to 4.4l/100km. So my question is....Is my driving at the same speed day in day out much like pottering about the city and the dpf has to be treated the same as someone that just potters about? Seems like it. Let me know what you think.

I wouldn't think a 10% increase would be anything to worry about.

Could possibly just be a build up of soot over time?

if you are doing over 80km/hr for any length of time , especially like on a freeway then the DPF will do micro burns to clean itself out.

THe DPF is pretty useless on a car that does country/freeway km. The DPF is really there for city driving conditions to help with clean air rather than the Black clouds on every take off in stop start traffic.

Our long-term fuel consumption of Polo PD TDI seems to just be up and down anyway. 3 years of zig-zag consumption figures presumably due to tank filling inaccuracies despite my best efforts to be consistent.

Headwinds! Yep. Against it on the way to work and with it on the way home. I've just clocked 20,000km in about 5 months and still loving it.

At least once a day you have to use your right foot bit more and rev the engine well pass 3,000rpm. It's best done when driven up the steep hill. Otherwise, you're killng the turbo and it will eventually fail and will need to be replaced or cleaned (very expensive).
