Well its done, and not without a bit of nostalgia for the ol 1.5D donk. It has (and still is) a very good motor and is a perfect pairing with the chb cordoba gearbox.

    Out with the old

    And in with the new

I used the back way to get the motors out and in.

    My helpers.....

    Install complete

    Things to do now include:

replace gearbox drive shaft seal holder (the green sheetmetal one) as its damaged and leaking
install washer bottle - I have a petrol washer bottle and mount to go behind the battery
source and install a cordoba air cleaner box (thanks mollins for the idea)
    wire up reverse switch
    mount fuel filter
mod alternator to run the tachometer
    exhaust
    intercooler
    egt etc etc.......

The car pulls really well in 2nd and 3rd. In 4th and 5th it isnt brilliant but has a very laid back feel. Boosts to 10psi

    Well Done Buddy

Thats too funny... what are the odds? i'm putting the Turbo into a Mexico Beige GLD... although i have owned 3 beige Mk1s... Awesome work mate... I'm getting closer too...lots of little subtle differences between the motor out of the passat...

On that note does anyone think i will have any trouble using the Passat Sump? Its lower than the golf sump but not by much... My golf is lowered by a inch or two...

Does this indicate that there is an LSD in there or just that the spider gears are stuck? I will replace the flange seals as they are leaking so I might be able to tell from that..... Gearbox code is 8A
Not necessarily. In a differential, if the input is locked, then the wheels will turn in opposite directions as the average output speed is the same as the input speed. If the transmission is is neutral, then as long as there is nothing stopping the input to the diff turning, the outputs should turn in the same direction.

You can check for a diff lock or LSD by having the transmission in neutral and then turning each output flange in different directions. If they do turn in opposite directions then there is no diff lock or LSD. LSD usually requires a fairly high torque input before it starts working anyway.

Without the benefit of red paint, the beige mk1 diesels require turbocharging. Mine has red injector lines and red turbo oil drain for an additional performance boost.

The fuel consumption is phenomenally low, but performance wise it is probably on par with the 1.6 petrol golf.

I will be fabricating a downpipe or two and will need a welder. I have been advised that I should purchase a tig welder instead of a mig welder. My limiting factor is the power supply is limited to 1600W continuous and 2400W for 30 minutes. Again, opinions are requested

I agree with gldgti, I have a mig. But just after I bought mine the 'new' inverter welders came out. They are much more energy efficient and lighter in weight (definitely and issue). I am told they also do tig and mig welding. I have kicked myself for not waiting as I knew they were coming out. Also buy a solar-powered welding helmet, so much more convenient than having to flip the screen up and down every time you do a weld! Once you have a welder it's amazing how much you find you need one! Get the best you can afford!

    Just buy a MIG.

If you can, copper transformer, 250amp single phase, remote wire feeder.

You get what you pay for with these things and the more you spend the better you'll get (And the better your welds will be, too).

    Thanks AP, they're little terrors!

Mark, what parts do you need for your MK1 TD swap? I highly recommend you do it. Do you have a 5 speed box and mount? I will have a spare 5 speed mount soon if you're interested. Also, do you need a downpipe? I will be fabricating two for myself so my stock downpipe will be surplus to my needs.

If you need any other parts, with the strong aussie dollar, I suggest looking at the for sale section on vwdiesel.net

Do you have any photos of the motor while it was still in the passat?
