Hey Ayden, this motor is very sooty when given a mild poke off idle (in neutral). It pulls well up to around 80km/hr then it seems like when the turbo is producing boost (maxes out at 10psi) there is no more fuel. Any advice on where to start with tuning this motor would be appreciated. Before i do too much I will install an EGT gauge that I have here, plus an intercooler and 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust. I just need to fab a downpipe as the standard unit would make a good funnel (2.25" down to 1.5"!)

I dont know how the engine ended up in the Passat... and unsure of the VW history. But it was a genuine 1.6td...

I will go and open up my 1.5 pump and show you what mods I did... When i get around to doing the 1.6td i will get a gasket kit as the throttle shaft leaked after I did the mod...

With the mod it would continually pull till i wanted it to stop... If you drive your 1.5 till the red marks on the speedo (i.e. max suggested revs for that gear) you will feel it starving but still be able to make it to those marks. With the Gov mod you will easily be able to rev over these and still feel it pulling all the way.

Ok into the Shed with my video cam and a walk through of the Gov mod.... Stay tuned.....

    Hey mate,
The diff doing that is normal, dont worry about it.

Your pump looks like a good one, it should have a proper boost pin and the adjustable spring seat for the boost diaphragm in the pump top.

First thing I would do is turn the fuelling down a little bit, then adjust the boost pin to the most agressive taper. Theres a lot of things to adjust but without seeing it running or driving it its difficult to make a good judgement about how to tune it.

If you find the governor is cutting in in a really big way, then i'd look into doing the gov mod. just shim the main spring in there with some little washers or a M5 nut or something.

A K14 will be really cool in the mk1, but the k24 should give you better performance if you can tune the pump to deliver the fuelling well and have a good exhaust so help the spool up.

Anyway, 10psi is not enough - you want at least 16-17psi and more with a good intercooler setup.

I'm really interested in this thread. Any idea what sort of power you'll have? I'm not asking from the boy racer point of view. My MK1 has a 90 hp 1.8L motor and I do 180 ks each day on country roads. I'd love something that's very economical but still has decent power to take on the hills and overtaking the slow traffic. The torque and economy of a diesel really appeals to me.

    Hey mate,

With some head porting, a decent turbo setup (like a large VNT or a large single turbo with lag, or a clever but hard work twin turbo setup) and good pump tuning, 200hp is possible from a 1.6 TD. The 1.9TD (not TDI) like I have in my mk3 seems to have an upper limit around 260hp.

My mk3 is making 120hp and 300Nm at the wheels with a Garrett T3 (with plenty of potential). If I wasn't concerned about replenishing my savings after buying the Octavia, I'd probably think about converting my old mk3 to something more stock before selling it and keeping that engine for a mk1 - cos like you are thinking, that much hp and torque in a light car is just plain fun.

Back to your main question though - a 1.6TD with a k14 should be able to make 90-100hp easily, running around 20psi boost, which is easy to run with no engine mods at all. The most important thing is to tune the pump to deliver enough fuelling and have a decent exhaust and intercooler setup.
