    Hiho

I blew the head gasket on my 1.5, and i just just lucked on to the td thanks to Peter Jones. Originally i got the td as i was a bit scared of the timing belt coming off to change the head... But then i realised that i would have to pull the pump off the td to swap the engine bracket. But i slowly worked through it being super cautious of everything, got the engine mount, pump and new timing belt on.

Ive got it in the car now but it smokes like a mofo, and wont idle so i will have to time it properly. But least i know that i didnt stuff up the timing belt when i swapped the engine mount over.

I put the 4 speed back in as i wasn't too sure of what 5 speed to get... but it is something i would like to do down the track... i dont tdo too much hwy driving atm so its not super important to me just yet. And I know there is likely to be a difference of shaft sizes...

ive got a gas manifold off a mk2 and i am looking at trying to clock the turbo so i can take advantage of the long runners on the intake manifold so i can get better low down torque. And obviously that will change the length of the down pipe, so i haven't thought about one just yet. I've got a stock toilet bowl down pipe and top off the pipe where the passat exhaust was bolted on...

I was thinking that i might give it a shot myself so i can buy a welder so that i will be able to use it to do some body work welding on the De Soto. I was thinking of buying a tig but any suggestions would be more than welcome.

My main issue at the moment is that it leaks like a bastard from the oil cooler plate. Everything seems tight but it just pisses oil out everywhere. I'm able to pull the pump off, do a timing belt change, but the oil cooler stumps me... GGRRRR...

When all that is sorted i will look at inter cooling and meth injection.... gov mod

What 5 speed boxes would i be able to use with your GB mount??

    Nice work, once again.

    Buy a MIG.

Any 020 5 spd should be fine.

I have had a chb box in my 1.5 for a couple of years and loved it. Its 4th is almost the same as the 4 speed.

For the 1.6TD you could source a 5 speed diesel box that would have to come from the US or Europe and would be mid 80's vintage. THese have the tall .75 5th gears. If you are happy with a slightly lower top gear ratio, grab a box from a Seat Toledo. I have an AMC coded box that I found at Centre Road Wreckers for $125 (including flywheel and clutch). It has the larger input shaft and 210mm clutch and a 0.80 5th gear. THe only problem is the 100mm drive shaft flanges but you can modify the Mk1 drive shafts to accept the larger CV joints. I believe that this box appeared in mid 90's diesel vw's too.

    Mark,

i have a couple of spare oil cooler plates if you need one. THe aluminium housing can bend a little so that the O-rings dont get compressed enough to seal.

WHat turbo do you have on the motor? ALso, is the exhaust manifold the same as for the golf TD's? I'd like to use a better flowing intake but the gasser manifold doesnt fit well with the TD exhaust manifold and turbo. If I get a tig welder I'll make a custom intake

    Hiho

I'll check the cooler plates tomorrow for straightness. and double check the o ring seals... it just seems like between setting up my bio rig and this oil leak ive been swimming in oil lately...

I believe the turbo is a k26. And i believe that the ex manifold is the same as the golf, only the downpipe is different.

Ive heard that by flipping the exhaust manifold and rotating the turbo the gasser manifold should fit without too much modification. And still have the turbo pointing in the right direction for hooking up the hoses.

Theres at least two more cordobas with manual gearboxes there. One already has a drive shaft removed so therees one less thing to do to get it out.....

If you do go there you will need the right tool for undoing the drive shafts from the flanges. A 6mm allen key sometimes works but usually just strips them. the correct device is a double hex or triple square 12 point tool. works a treat. GAP sells it.

None of the boxes have reverse switches...... Heres an idea - take the whole box if your 4speed reverse switch is broken!
