I agree with you about that warranty policy. Its interesting though, my Polo is not by a long shot the first VW in the family, however it is the first Diesel in my lifetime. My old man has an '06 Golf 2.0 FSI and before that an '01 Polo 1.4 16V and neither of those used any. My cousin overseas had a 1987 Golf II 1.6 Diesel, but I was too young to remember anything about that car.

A few people have tried to tell me its normal for diesel engines to use a little oil, but the only other one I have any experience with, one of our work vans, a 2004 Ford Transit 2.4 TDCi doesn't use any between its 10,000km intervals, so I'm still not sure what to think.
