    wow, thats a weird one on a new car. VW have been slowly modifiying their oil seals over the years to make them cheaper, I wonder if its a sign of the times....

    All the oil seals used to be proper synthetic polymer seals with a metallic spring and reinforcement, that got pressed into the alloy housings. Then in the 2000's they started making the housing and oil seal one part, and the oil seal was more lightly built, with a fibrous impregnation in the polymer rather than a spring to keep it tight on the rotating shaft. Cheaper and lighter..... maybe not as reliable?

    I guess that could be true, would make sense.
