    New diesel

I know this is a VW forum and if the mods see fit please move this to wherever you think suitable. Just thought some people might be interested, I'm not sure if it's already been posted or not but it appears that everyone is getting on the diesel wagon

Nice find Russ, and a nice animation, really shows the diesel combustion process well. Shame they are sticking with a top mount intercooler, they are notorious for getting hot. I noticed the big DPF after the turbo too.

Golfie is right, I wonder if this layout may just sound a bit cool for a diesel!

Shame about the subie looks though....

I think I preferred the earlier style of the Subies more than the present models, I had an '06 Forester, the model just before the latest model came out and they changed the style so much from the original. I don't think Subaru did themselves any favours with the new car sales figures either because I'm not seeing that many of the latest models driving around as yet, not in my area anyway

VW are taking it further with the sporty diesels. Never going to see habbib with 20" chromes in his Diesel WRX are we?

    whoa.

given that diesels are always on boost, does that mean that it would be an easy win at the lights against either of those? (detonation with those tmic?).

and mikinoz- i WOULD say that once people open their eyes and realise just how capable small displacement diesels are, with superb in-gear pull, things might begin to change.

but then who would i be kidding? some people would rather die than believe that tdi's can be fun, zippy cars in spite of their excellent fuel economy....

oh well. back to being naive.

That's the car I'm waiting to road test - don't want to by Tiguan yet? Forester has better drive train (better than the east-west engine in Tig).
The top intercooler is fine, it is water cooled intercooler they are more efficient than air to air intercoolers - at least for normal driving.
Yeah, the looks of the late model Subarus are a bit odd.
But hey when I shut the door and get inside the car I don't care how ugly it is from the outside (has it's limits) as long as the handling is good.
Reliability and performance is more important than looks.

Scotty, a diesel can't really detonate, no spark plug to fire too soon ( causing detonation). The subie will undoubtably be about the same power, torque at least, in the real world, so I'd leave them alone.

Any top mount intercooler is a bad idea, ESPECIALLY water, for once it gets hot, well it stays hot for a long long time. Heat rises, so it seems silly to put something you want to keep cool on top of the hot engine, and in a place of lower air pressure. Water 2 air is great for drag racing, but the main reason I gave up on a water intercooler is the heat retaining problem, and virtually every US monster diesel runs air to air because of this.

Bummer, because I thought I was on a winner!
