    The same applies to both.

Any top mount intercooler is a bad idea, ESPECIALLY water, for once it gets hot, well it stays hot for a long long time. Heat rises, so it seems silly to put something you want to keep cool on top of the hot engine, and in a place of lower air pressure. Water 2 air is great for drag racing, but the main reason I gave up on a water intercooler is the heat retaining problem, and virtually every US monster diesel runs air to air because of this.

Bummer, because I thought I was on a winner!

    Correction.
Diesel engine will detonate (have pre ignition).
Unless I learned porkies at the school.

Detonations in diesel is less noticeable because of its noise characteristic.
Usually you will notice it when it's too late, (loss of performance due to engine damage, like hole in the piston caused by leaking/faulty injector).
I'm sure you will find more information on this.

Water intercooler has also its advantage and Subaru has their reason for useing it.

For a more detailed explanation of the ignition process comparison between petrol and diesel, I found this which sounds reasonable without being too complex for us non mechanical nerds. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/in...3223725AAqSZ1v

I'd like to know how a CAM driven injection system could ever pre-ignite. Nothing happens until you add the fuel, and as the PD VW's don't have variable cam timing, the start of injection is mechanically constant. All the ECU can control is how much diesel is "spilt" back into the fuel runners during injection, hence controlling the amount injected. The injector nozzle itself responds to pressure alone, so unless it's faulty, it would never be able to preignite. Adding propane changes all that though. Here's a great explanation of PD:

Water intercooling for petrol is a great thing. For a normal road driven diesel, not so. That site is all about petrol Mr T. Believe me I've looked heavily into it, and have actually bought all but the core when I decided to abandon a W2A idea. It all comes down to how much the car is on boost, which between petrol and diesel is very, very different. W2A in a diesel would be great for several minutes, but once it finally got hot in a almost always boosting diesel, it would then become a heater instead. Water takes longer to heat up, AND to cool down. Defeats the purpose in normal driving. Hey I wish it wasn't so!! As much as it appeals to me, none of the US guys are into water intercooling for road drivers. That says something given the insane budget of some of these people!

It's all a moot point really, I'm sure Subaru have done the testing, and it will be interesting to see, and hear!

It should be here by the end of this year, that's what the dealer in Adelaide said.

Will be interesting to see what sort of sales the diesels will bring for Subaru. They do have a nice sporty look about them though. Maybe if they sell really well VW might consider bringing the Golf GTD to OZ sooner rather than later

Yeah, it would be nice if they bring the 4motion version as well.
The thing to go for in the Forester is the longitudinal drive train system as is in Q5.

Here is another option to Forester:
    You will like that one

Would be nice, but an Audi is a bit out of my price range atm I'm afraid. Maybe if I win Lotto, but that's highly unlikely I would think

thanks guys for the info- LOTS to learn about cars for me.

what i dont get is, despite the fact that everyone knows that top mounts see huge temperatures, why do subaru persist with this?

im reading up on nasioc re top mounts. any other obvious reasons?

i'd take em on. it'd be interesting- we'd have same power, but i'd have less weight. and the advantage of my car being a cutesy girl's car.

Subie flat four is a very very wide motor. Think of a BMW motorcycle.

Leaves little room around the sides like a normal engine, and a whole lot of top room. Guess the figured they'd use the space, and by keeping it close they run short pipes, giving quicker response, when it's cool anyhow!

    How's that for a guess??
