    My Golf GT TDI Catch Can + Intake

    just though i'd post up pics of what i've done to my gt

    the catch can is just behind the intake elbow, you can just see the top of it, made a custom can out of stainless steel with an aluminium cap and 1" fittings



    i know the mounting methods are a bit ghetto but i only did it tempo due to finishing it late sunday night



    last pic is the view where it get plumbed thru the hole below the passengers side headlamp for the cold air

    So hot oil is going to be running down the clear plastic tube?

    Do you have a pod filter in the wheel well?

    The top tube over the battery is the return line Benno, and I think you'll be amazed to see just how much actually returns!

    Nice to see someone else attacking this very real problem

    Good move with the catch can. But what is built into the can which actually seperates the oil from the air?

    There's a number of excellent off the shelf oil/air seperators on the market now. Provent, Mann Hummel etc all cost a bit of dosh but let bugger all oil through.

    So the oil temp won't melt the plastic tubing?

    I thought that if you had your car new since 2008 the good diesel Australia has had since then doesn't make this that huge an issue?

    The sheer blowby and oil that was ending up back in my inlet even through a well maintained additional Provent tells me it's going to be a major issue on all MK5 diesels eventually. Given the diesel's huge compression, there's a LOT of blowby pressure, far more than the gas engines. I think it's THE major issue with the TDI's, and my Provent outlet is about to be plumbed into my exhaust right after the DPF via a Moroso valve and venturi assembly from a V8 kit. No more oil in my inlet thanks very much.

    With the Provent at total loss, that is the gas venting out onto the road, I can see the oil "smoke" in my headlights on idle at night, and that's after a Provent with a new cartridge! You stock guys are gulping it in, mixing it with your exhaust recycling, and slowly clogging your inlet manifold, EGR flap and throttle flap mechanism. One guy on here has already had his flap motor fail due to crud buildup, can't recall exactly who. Got done under warranty, which is nice given the near $1k pricetag from memory. He won't be the last. My inlet had a nice thick sludge layer at 40km's, which is now pretty clean again, and going to stay that way. You always lose a little oil via the total loss turbo bearings, but it's a fraction compared to what I've found coming back via the tappet cover.

    VW have decided the emission issue is more important than inlet health, which I can understand, but you're mad not to boost the oil separation on the diesel's if you intend keeping the car beyond 100k.

    I've now drained towards a litre ( at a rough guess ) out of my Provent over about 40k of driving, that's a lot of oil vapour condensing, and even then plenty is still getting through.

    blocking the EGR is not always the best option.

    the big tube u can see is the return line, and i've had the catch can on for about 2 months now and the return line is spotless, the can itself has a baffle between the inlet and outlet, with a basket on the outlet where i have put sum steel wool in. it is quite a large can and it very effective as far as i can tell.

    also my air filter is a k&n universal pod and does sit in the area in front of the wheel behind the passengers side of the front bar. the new intake makes it sound a whole lot better especially in the airport tunnel.

    my main worry is because i am a mechanic myself, i have changed a couple of the fly by wire throttle/egr units on various european diesels.

    can i ask a diesel newbie question ?

    i have been reading these posts about the EGR for a few weeks now.
    is this something i should be concerned with on my 2005 120k 1.9 PD TDI ?

    this is my first diesel car , and probably won't be my last.
    i have only owned it for about 3 months, and apart from a hard starting when hot issue that is now solved, it's been faultless.

    should i be looking at fitting a oil / air separator ?
