    Morey's diesel smoke killer....info required

    Hi guys

    Long time no post!
    I've just had my 60000km service done on my 08 DSG TDI Jetta. I reported a couple of problems to the dealer, one being a rough shudder on the point of ignition starting the engine when it's warm, and, a problem with my auto-dimming rear view mirror not working.

    I got a call from the VW dealer say the tech has noticed a "film" on the fuel filter and wondered whether I was using biodiesel in the Jetta. I told them that I use the Morey's diesel smoke killer every tank for the smoke killing and the biocidal properties. They are not sure whether or not the Moreys has caused the film on/in the fuel filter or not, but they have recommended that I DON'T use any additives at all as VW doesn't recommend any additives. Now I know that's probably standard VW cautionary talk, but has anyone heard this from any other VW Techs? I told them while I was choosy about where I fill up, sometimes you don't have a choice and if you suck up some algae out of a poorly maintained tank, you're up for some cash cleaning out the algae.
    Is there any other alternative other than hoping you won't suck up some algae? I know two people just recently got some algae in their diesel. Thankfully not from around here.

    BTW, Hope that your auto-dimming rear view mirror doesn't play up - $500 to replace!! Thankfully extended warranty will cover that

    Pretty sure Transporter recommends Morey's Diesel Smoke Killer to his customers to be used every tank. You would probably have better luck posting this in the Diesel section, or just PM Transporter directly, definitely take his words rather than the dealers. Sounds like typical dealer ramble to me though, I don't see how the smoke killer will cause that film. If you use it purely for biocidal purposes though, I'm fairly sure the new BP Ultimate diesel already includes that.

    The black film on the fuel filter is common and it's caused by the properties in our diesel. The reason why dealers don't recommend using any additive in the fuel is because there are so many additives in the market that they can't have the control over the quality and don't want to take the responsibility if they would've recommend using the additives and it damages the engine somehow.

    Many dealers are using the additives simply because they know what to use and they use it properly. I'm not saying that you don't know about the correct dosage and so on.

    Moreys Diesel Smoke Killer is OK to use and it will not harm the DPF if used in recommended ratio.

    Yeah, its fairly normal to accumulate a fair bit of crud in the filter. Diesel can be fairly dirty from some outlets.

    The question about biodiesel is a valid one - its a vigorous cleaner and will strip the build up from the fuel lines and tank and deposit it in the filter in fairly short order. After I got my octavia, I started running bio in it straight away but after about 2000km did a big service on it (it had just over 90,000 on it when I bought it). Who knows what condition the filter was in when I first bought the car, but certainly it was black when I replaced it.

    After 20,000km on bio since, the filter is still nice and clean

    When you say the *new* Ultimate, do you mean the one *without* the cetane improver? According to specifications it changed in May 2010. Original BP Ultimate Diesel definitely did not have a biocide/algicide, according to the BP engineers at launch.

    There is no mention of a biocide in the specification.

    1) includes a lubricity additive
    2) includes a detergent additive to clean fouled injectors
    3) includes an additive to protect against corrosion
    4) includes an additive to reduce foaming and splash back.
    The only potential problem with Morey's DSK I'm worried about is the possiblity of the cetane improver contributing to injector fouling, since that was found in research on 2EHN as isolated additive. I presume the injector cleaner component stops this, but would like to see some research. Anyone got any ideas? Have asked Morey's for more information but no reply so far.....

    According to spiritmonitor.de, the fuel consumption on our new Yeti is way higher than all the other Yeti's with 103kW TDI. Driving conditions very mixed, similar to others.

    Bluey, you can monitor DPF with VCDS and some other scaners. It is a good indicator how are the injectors doing and fuel system as well. I use Moreys DSK in our Tiguan since new and am very happy with it. I've changed engine oil 2 days ago (done 15,000km) and checked some DPF data; total numbers of regenaration request - 6.

    The picture is from Snap-on scanner. I know should've use the VCDS but Snap-on resets the service indicator faster and is quick in checking some data as well.
    My wife uses the Tig to drive to work 16km drive one way and to shops 3km and 8km one way.


    Very happy with that result.

    The second Tiguan is my daughter’s ride and she does approx. 6km in the morning and 6km in the afternoon in the centre of Adelaide. Tiguan didn't clock 1,500km yet, but I've already checked the DPF at around 800km and I was very happy what I saw in VCDS. Both cars use Moreys DSK religiously at every fill up. They cary 100ml bottles in the boot and I just refill them when empty.
    In addition to this I aslo use the BG244K once evey 7,500 instead Moreys DSK.

    I've never followed it up, but I've been told in the past by the parts department that VW does have their own fuel additives for both petrol and diesel. I was also told in the same conversation that they were reluctant to sell it due to dealership politics, and the fact that the service department ahd gone down their own path of 'treatments'. Mind you, these were on-car setups, where many a hose or hoseclamp was damaged to hook the whole thing up. Do not recommend.

    Honestly, I couldn't tell you which ones work, and which ones don't, as I wouldn't typically see a car's fuel system again for another 30,000-60,000klms. By then, it's all forgotten.
