    MK5 2L Tdi Maintenance (DIY)

    First post here...

My girlfriend has a mk5 golf 2L Tdi. Its done 105,000kms and I am going to do some maintenance.

First of all general service things,

    Then cam belt and waterpump,

And I recon it should have a transmission oil change, but found a post on here and it looks like none does them DIY or professional. This is a similar situation with Peugeot 406 AL4 transmission, “sealed for life” but after 80,000kms they are stuffed... so I am keen to change the oil and filter in this DSG..

My background is with Peugeot, used to work as a Pug mechanic and now at uni doing mech. eng. I have rebuilt engines from nothing but a box of parts...

So with the cam belt has anyone changed them? I’m interested to see if special tools are actually required. To change a Peugeot cam belt you “need” special tools to, but even dealerships don’t have these tools... main tool on the VW seems to be the one to lock crank, more than one way to skin that cat...

    Welcome!

Can't help directly, but from my eperience with vw's a certain number of special tools is necessary... and all can usually be made up with bits of scrap steel you probably have laying about if you are like me and do a lot of "tinkering".

i'd find some literature forst and foremost about the DSG oil change... then i'm sure your common sense will sort out any probs. from what i've gathered from heresay on other threads about this, its basically just like any Auto trans fluid change.

    good luck!

    So service done,
-Running better I suspect because of how black the fuel filter was...
-Still got to do cam belt and water pump, not sure where to go for cam belt, Bursons said gates and Dayco didn’t do them.. any ideas or is it a genuine VW job?
-Noticed some oil leaking from pipes at bottom of intercooler, is this common? Wondering if the O rings that seal where the pipes join need replacing...
-the LH outer CV boot is also leaking a bit, does anyone know if I pull the shaft out of the gearbox the box will leak oil? If it does I might have to sort out the trans service first... just the level that has me scratching my head still on that one...

Hi and a huge welcome to you! hope you enjoy this forum, we are a helpful bunch here.
Be very careful doing the DSG service. You definately need special equipment to refill it through the drain hole! I managed to buy the filler arrangement from the local dealer. The oil is genuine only too.
    Cheers and welcome once again,
