    Mk3 1.9 1z to Mk 4 ASZ 1.9 swop?

Hi all, anyone foresee any major issues with swopping the standard Golf Mk3 1z 1.9 tdi with a Golf Mk4 ASZ 1.9 tdi? Also, will any of the Mk4 gearboxes fit the ASZ motor, for instance, if an engine comes with a an auto, can a manual box swop straight over? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Dave.

Finding the mk4 1.9 Tdi might be a mission, I don't think we get those here

Engine and transmission mounts will be a hassle. Same goes for the electrics.

I'd agree with this. it would be a fair hassle I imagine, especially for the electrics.

any particular reason why you're looking at doing the swap?

Reason for swopping is the original 1.9 tdi is getting a little long in the tooth, plus a little more power wouldn't go astray.
Any other suggestions for a tdi replacement rather than rebuilding the original motor? Cheers, Dave.

    Dave,

The 1z is pretty much identical in the bottom end (piston crown shape is different but the geometry is the same) and in the head, only the injection system is different.

But, to run the mk5 1.9 you will need the ECU, key and all the wiring. Thats a mission, but not impossible.... just, BIG. If you love the mk3, then its a doable project, but if the mk3 is just another car, it would be cheaper just to buy a mk5 and have done with it. Also note that in stock form, theres pretty much no difference in power either (the mk5 tdi is 77kw, the 1z is 90hp but is capable of just as much hp tuned).

How long in the tooth is the mk3 anyway?

I have rebuilt a 1Y (same era) and its an easy job if you are up for it and have the tools. I'm not sure I'd pay someone else to do it, but for the parts cost alone its a couple of weekends work at most if you've done that kind of thing before.
