mk V 2.0 tdi Alternator options

    Hi Guys

I have an alternator that is about to fail and I'm advised that the golf v alternators are not a repairable. replacement alternator - which way is advisable - genuine or aftermarket?

    thanks

    hey mate....

did you actually try an autoelectrician? I'd be pretty surprised if they werent serviceable.

For our interest - how many km on the car and whats supposed to be wrong with the alternator?

Also, the auto-leccy would be able to let you know about getting a replacement for sure.

There's a sprag clutch in the belt pullty on them that fails, meaning the pulley just free-wheels, not charging the battery. You can test this, by locking the internals with a screwdriver, and turning the pulley clockwise by hand. If turns, the pulley has failed.

You can replace the pulley easily enough, but you need the tool for it, which you can buy for around $20 off Ebay.
