    Thanks Gigitt.
Good to know I just need a black glovebox.

This TDI is as you say, more CL trim; fender whip aerial, manual window winders, (no drink cans ), black bumpers, no glovebox as above and GL badge.
Really good info on the glovebox, you really know your way around these things.
Badly needs a wash, then must do some pics.

Yeah trim levels on mk3 diesels seems to be pretty random.

My old diesel had CL seats and fully textured black plastic bumpers, but it had power windows!

    And who knew?
The car came with just the one key, so a spare was deemed prudent.
I spent much of yesterday at the key-cutters.
Turns out the aged '95 Golf does have a chip, and that its a locked chip.
We cut a key and it started the car for about two seconds... and cut out.
However, our cunning manager of the key shop thinks he has a solution.
He was able to de-code the chip with his laptop.
And arrange to buy in a blank.
I have to return for the product in a few days. Cost of $130.
As he is going to have to throw away the first key body, it seems reasonable.

Yeah the keys have imobiliser chip - it's tied into the ECU and Instrument Cluster.
I got 2 keys, one has a push button light built in and when you take the cover off to change the battery you can see the chip.
The other Key has no light and cannot be opened - the chip is moulded inside the plastic.

My Mk3 TDI came stock with colour coded bumpers, Bee Sting arial, Dual H7 Headlights, Manual Window winders, Air Conditioniong, Glovebox, Front Speakers Only.

I added Cruise Control when I found out it is totally electronic and controled by the ECU and Fly By Wire.

From Memory optional extras in AUS were Air Con, ABS, Cruise COntrol, Electric Windows, Sunroof, Colour Coded Bumpers.

Thanks for that, saw the chip, its tiny, no battery there, no wire to key body, and no idea how it works for decades without.
And agreed Gigitt, , its random trim central.
I have the dual headlights, rear speakers, air-con thank God, cruise control, (which I need to find someone to look at, but black bumper bars and mudguard aerial etc, no idea about ABS, or how to check, short of a skid-fest.

Chip in key works like the RFID chips in your Credit Card (Pay Wave/Pass) or Elecronic Work Passes. No battery required but are powered by the transmitters signal and give of a encrypted ID. if the ID is correct then the car will run. Range is typically about 15-30cm

ABS is easy to find... under where my catch can is - or your 2nd fuel filter is...
is where the Brake hard pipes get split to all wheels... basically if you have a 1in tube that the hard pipe come out to wheels = no ABS, but if you have whopping big hunk of metal block probably 10cm x 10cm x 10cm with a filter looking on top you have ABS.

Also you will also have ABS warning light next to where the Airbag warning light is in the trim peice above the headlight switches.

    SOoo,
No ABS, and still no spare key, they are on it, though, they say.
Now after a brief night drive in the country,.. time to embarrass myself.
I am ready to admit that I havent located the , ahem, high beam as yet.
I suppose I could pull the manual But I thought full disclosure would be more fun for everyone.
This lack was commented on by the examiner testing my son for his "P" plates recently... oh dear, bad father.
Also, not that it matters where we live, it seems the hottest part of the in-car heating when you turn it on is the control knob.
Heater on or off, air-con on or off, no warm. Only found out on a 5:00AM drive to go bushwalking....
    Live and learn.

for the high beams - pull the left stalk towards you (and let it return) to turn them on, and the same to run them off.... its a momentary switch.

    for the heater -

if the car has had a heater core leak someone may have bypassed it by joining together the two hoses that normally connect to the core at the firewall.

if thats all intact it could be broken plastic lever-type bits in the control board in the dash.

if thats OK then you may also find that there is no plastic covering left in the diverter flap, and as such the hot air just gets mixed with lots of cold air.

To replace the lining on the diverter flap and/or replace the heater core is a massive job (set yourself aside a weekend).

    Thanks for that, gldgti.
The stalk, which is also cruise control, does not pull forward.
I am wondering if the CC is after-market, and that the mod has something to do with it.
I notice that when the headlights switch is in the headlights on position, it can also be lifted out, and wonder if that was it?
I will have a look at the heater routing on the week-end, thanks for that info. SOunds like fun one way or another.

The headlight switch pulling out is for the foglights. One click out is the rear foglight(s) and 2 is the fronts.
