    Mechanic recommendations in melbs

    Hi guys

Im still in the process of fitting a mk2 turbo diesel into my mk1. It was a Kim process due to it coming out of a passat ad all the engine mounts which housed the pump had to be changed. The engine runs but doesn't idle and I need someone to time it properly for me

Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a mechanic that had diesel pump tools that is located in melbourne as close to aspendale as possible.

I really need to get this back in the road as the Missus is on my back to get her car back.

    Many thanks in advance guys

    Cheers

hey mate, I cant help with local knowledge but if you want to do it yourself I can help you with that.

Theres a lot of things to check but assuming you have timed the crank/cam properly when you put the t-belt back on, and it runs, then it can't be far off:

    > lots of white smoke/rough running means the timing is too retarded. This means you need to rotate the top ofthe IP towards the head to advance it
    > hard nailing noise means its too advanced and needs to be retarded. Opposite of above.
    > if you have desturbed the max fuel screw, try turning it in, in small increments to bring the fuelling up a bit.
    > if you havent adjusted the pump at all (apart from timing) make sure that its not sucking in air. you might be able to start it and run it at higher rpm, but if theres lots of air it may not idle. Fit a clear supply line between the pump and the filter.

If you can find a bolt the correct diameter to lock the IP sprocket to the pump bracket with the engine at TDC #1, then you should be able to get the timing close enough for it to work by lining up the little v shaped groove in the flange at the front of the pump (between the top two mouning bolts) with the groove in the pump mounting bracket.

dont forget to slacken/retighten the injector lines after you finish adjusting the pump timing to remove stress from the lines.

Thanks for that. I finally have a few days off and might just have the patience to check it out to see if I can get it to idle properly.

Once again thanks. I'll let you know how I go.
