I think a compound bi-turbo seems more likely (little turbo for zero-lag low-mid revs boost, handing over to a big turbo for mid-high revs POWAH ! ). IIRC both M-Benz and VW have been dabbling in this pond recently.
The current trend seems to be towards smaller motors (with big boost) to get better economy and emissions when cruising, but still able to supply plenty of power when required.
